Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, chemical/industrial hygiene, environmental sciences or related field. Two (2) years of related experience in chemical safety, radiation safety, hazardous waste, industrial hygiene, and/or laboratory safety required. Certified Chemical Hygiene Office, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Certified Radiation Officer preferred. Other related certifications could be considered. Must have or be able to obtain Certified Radiation Officer within 90 days of hire. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:
Serves as the technical expert and manager for biosafety, laboratory inspection, hazardous waste, chemical hygiene and radiation safety programs. This position will work with a variety of University stake holders to develop, implement and maintain appropriate policies and practices related to biosafety, radiation safety, laboratory compliance, hazardous waste. Will monitor and execute procurement contracts and usage in relation to Biosafety & Chemicals.
Primary Responsibilities (Staff Positions Only):
Coordinates and conducts all programs related to biosafety, teaching and research laboratory inspections, chemical hygiene and radiation safety programs for Sam Houston State University. Assesses and updates all policies, procedures, and training programs relating to Biosafety, Radiation, Chemical Hygiene, and Hazard Communication Plans. Performs inspections/audits of all teaching and research laboratories and associated programs to ensure compliance and safety. Provides reports and assessments of inefficiencies and follows up to ensure compliance. Works and assist University stakeholders with any laboratory's safety or chemical management need. Coordinates and executes the University's hazardous waste disposal program. Assist faculty, staff and students in maintaining compliance and safe conditions. Provides training as needed regarding Radiation Safety, Hazardous Communication, Bloodborne Pathogens, etc. Develops and maintains accurate inventory of controlled equipment, chemicals, etc. Assist with development of emergency response plans and may respond to emergency events/or investigate incidents associated with laboratories or similar work areas. Provides technical advice and recommends changes as needed to the appropriate party regarding teaching and research laboratory safety, laboratory security, personal protective equipment, laboratory construction/renovation.
