Assistant Farm Crew Leader Department: UT Plateau Research and Education Center Location: Crossville, TN
Working with the Center Director and Farm Crew Leader, the Assistant Farm Crew Leader assists with coordinating and overseeing daily operations of agricultural research projects and crop and livestock production. The position performs advanced agricultural duties, coordinates the work of designated personnel and assists research personnel in the implementation and execution of experiments. This is a regular, full-time hourly position with benefits.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Coordination of Work: *Leads and directs the work of farm personnel in daily operations of the center; makes work assignments and reviews work. - Assists with overseeing daily performance of agricultural operations and activities. - Assist with directing the work of farm personnel in agricultural research operations. -In consultation with the center director and/or research personnel, coordinates the allocation of equipment and personnel resources. Agricultural Operations: *Operates specialized farm/heavy power equipment; reports equipment and/or maintenance problems accordingly. *Duties include selection of materials, tools, equipment and methods to accomplish goals. *Assists maintenance or other personnel in the repair and maintenance of facilities and/or equipment. *Manages field crop production (preparation, planting, and harvest). *Manages chemical application program and compliance. *Observes crop well-being and livestock welfare and instructs support personnel on needed corrective actions. *Operates trucks and trailers to haul equipment and livestock on state highways requiring CDL license.
Facility Maintenance and Repairs: -Responsible for overseeing facility maintenance and repairs to buildings, equipment, and fences. - Performs or supervises maintenance and repairs to 7 residences, office, shops, greenhouses, and barns. - Purchases routine supplies and equipment required to support daily operations. This includes feed, fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides, tools, and minor equipment. - Reports equipment/facility repair issues to center director. Research: - Primary responsibility to oversee/conduct the agronomic research work plans. This includes seedbed preparation, calibration, planting, chemical application, harvesting, data collection and reporting. - Assists research personnel with planning, implementation and conducting of research experiments. - Oversees operations to assure safe and proper conduct of research experiments.
