This position is responsible for securing significant philanthropic support for the School of Public Health (SPH) at the University of Minnesota. This individual is responsible to cultivate and solicit major gifts to support education, research, and outreach with major gift prospects.

Its faculty members are regularly sought after by national and international media to provide perspectives on some of the world's most pressing public health problems, such as infectious disease, smoking and obesity.
SPH faculty and graduate students tackle local, national and global issues, from affordable healthcare to clean water, and the school boasts one of the largest research portfolio among all colleges at the University of Minnesota.
Identify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors with a specific focus on major gift prospects in SPH.
Develop an annual plan of work, including planned solicitations, a revenue goal for every donor, strategy and carefully laid out plan on how you will achieve that goal with each donor with an emphasis on achieving established standards and metrics.
Take full responsibility and accountability for all agreed upon goals.
Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of SPH and philanthropic priorities to effectively and compellingly present its case to prospects and donors.
Build and manage a portfolio of no more than 150 major gifts ($50,000 and above) prospects. Take timely and strategic steps in moving prospects through the major gift cycle of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Utilize various giving methods such as current, deferred giving, and non-cash gifts.
Manage and lead specific fundraising projects pertaining to areas of focus.
Clear and coordinate prospective donors through appropriate University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF) procedures to ensure effective solicitation of the donor that maximizes the gift to the University and the donor’s satisfaction with the institution.
Serve as a member of the overall development team by collaborating with colleagues across disciplines and other Foundation staff on donor strategies. Work with UMF development research to continue to identify new potential major gift prospects for future gift opportunities.
Initiate and oversee the development of proposals and written material in support of specific major gift fundraising initiatives.
Complete, file and maintain accurate, relevant and timely reports and records of donor/prospect contacts by utilizing database, employing discretion while recording information of relevance to appropriate individuals.
Attend University, SPH school-wide and program-level, as well as external functions as recommended, actively contributing to their success. Serve on committees as appropriate.
Work in alignment with SPH Alumni Relations as part of the larger SPH Advancement Team.
Prepare reports and other required information as requested.
Accept and implement other specific assignments as directed.
This position requires some weekend and evening attendance at various University and external functions and occasional travel.

Minimum of three years professional fundraising experience, with demonstrated ability to promote and successfully solicit major gifts; or related experience in marketing, sales, public relations or related field with emphasis on relationship cultivation of individuals/businesses (5 years experience required for Senior Development Officer level).
Ability to work in highly accountable and fast-paced environment and maintain a strong sense of urgency coupled with demonstrated success in management of multiple priorities
Demonstrated success in working independently but also collaboratively in a team setting
Solid relationship-building skills with a diverse constituency of donors, faculty, strategic partners, volunteers and staff colleagues.
Proficient in the use of PC software, such as Microsoft Office, and current technology
Ability to maintain confidential information.
Strong commitment to a major, land grant/research university in an urban environment.
Development experience, including capital campaign experience, in higher education, health, or disease-related institution.
Demonstrated knowledge of basic business terminology, financial matters and the ethical, legal, and tax-related issues regarding the solicitation, transfer, and management of charitable gifts.
Outstanding oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including effective presentation skills.
Demonstrated ability to motivate and lead people and to work collaboratively
Knowledge of planned giving programs.
