NET, Nebraska’s PBS & NPR Stations, NPR and Member stations are creating an innovative system of regional newsrooms and the newest one, in the Midwest, is focused on investigative journalism.
We're looking for an experienced data journalist to work with newsrooms at stations in the region, NPR and the Midwest Newsroom investigative team to pursue impactful reporting that holds those in power accountable and reaches audiences on both broadcast and digital platforms.
This position will report original stories, contribute data analysis and reporting for newsroom projects, and collaborate on data visualizations for digital platforms. This position will also collaborate on projects, and bring experience with new approaches and methodologies.
The Data Journalist will be based at NET Nebraska, in Lincoln, and will be a University of Nebraska-Lincoln employee with a competitive benefits package. This position will work closely with NPR and Midwest Newsroom partner stations KCUR in Kansas City, St. Louis Public Radio and Iowa Public Radio. This is a three-year, grant-funded position. The Midwest Newsroom partners intend to raise funds to sustain the position beyond that period.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, computer science or equivalent field plus 3 years' experience in data journalism working as part of a team; equivalent education/experience will be considered. Demonstrated experience in tools to analyze and manage data. Proficiency in a scripting language. Familiarity with quantitative journalism best-practices and a strong understanding of journalism ethics. Demonstrated experience in tools to analyze and manage data. Ideal candidate will have experience in writing public-facing front-end code to best display your work a plus. Proficiency in mapping programs for use in investigations a plus. Experience working in radio or with audio a plus.
