The postdoctoral scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research in the discipline of central regulation of hypertension, with special emphasis on inflammatory signaling pathways in the brain. In addition to research experience ( developing and conducting experiments, analyzing data, writing peer-reviewed manuscripts), opportunities for professional development (mentor training, grant writing, etc.) will also be provided. Prospective candidates will be trained in areas including conscious animal blood pressure recording using telemetry system, brain-targeted microinjection for gene or drugs delivery, confocal and super resolution microscopy imaging, molecular and cellular basis study of signaling pathways. They will work in a multidisciplinary team with a diversity of interests, ideas, and experiences. Responsibilities include collecting pilot data to help support new and competing renewal applications, including hypothesis development, literature review, report writing, and supervising of undergraduate research students and graduate research students, overseeing data collection procedures, supervising experimental procedures, review of data for quality control, supervision of data entry/data analysis, analysis of data using descriptive and multivariate statistics, and the development of independent and collaborative presentations and publications. Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training. Approximately 80% of the post-doctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to managing the scholar’s day-to-day activity which includes conducting the specified studies referred to above as well as help graduate, and undergraduate students as needed. Approximately 20% of the post-doctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to the development of pilot data.

Organizational Unit Overview:
The Department of Pharmacology consists of 13 full-time faculty members, one full-time Postdoc, 10 full-time Research Technicians, two full-time secretaries and eleven graduate students. The department teaches Medical Pharmacology and Therapeutics to medical and graduate students and teaches Medical Pharmacology to the Physician Assistant students. A wide variety of specialized courses for graduate students are also taught. The educational objective of the department is to provide a sound basic foundation upon which medical students may build rational approaches to drug therapy regardless of the area of medical or surgical specialization. The graduate program through the Ph.D. in Pharmacology is broadly based to prepare students for careers in academics, research, government, industry and medicine.
In addition to their teaching duties, each of the faculty has a research laboratory and laboratory technician and performs research in his/her area of expertise. Faculty are expected to apply for grant support and to publish results of their research in professional journals.
