Academic and Student Affairs (ASA) is dedicated to creating a leading-edge experience for all students, inside and outside the classroom, in person and online, at the UW and beyond. The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is a division within ASA, charged with advancing evidence-based teaching, learning, and mentoring at the University of Washington. CTL is responsible for developing and delivering programs that promote advances in teaching and learning in departments, for groups of faculty members, graduate instructors, T.A.s, post-docs, and staff educators. CTL's work is deeply collaborative, engaging with Academic Technologies, the Graduate School, UW Libraries, Office of Educational Assessment, Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity, faculty governance, and academic units.
All CTL programs & services are driven by a commitment to promote evidence-based innovations in teaching that increase student engagement, student learning, and faculty efficiency. All CTL programs & services model and advance inclusive teaching, in face-to-face and online environments, as well as technologies that support course learning goals. The primary responsibilities of this position are to (1) co-design, co-facilitate, and support evidence-based peer teaching programming that is topic- and/or cohort-driven; and to (2) contribute research and resources to the UW community through the CTL web site, modules, tutorials, and other communication formats in response to national trends and data-informed UW teaching and learning initiatives.

This position requires the delivery of ongoing support of evidence-based and collaborative peer-teaching models for faculty development and professional development around teaching, learning, and mentoring for graduate students and staff educators. As such, the person in this position must be able to work collaboratively in a changing environment with operative deadlines, demonstrate the ability and willingness to learn from peers within and beyond the CTL, demonstrate excellent communication skills, and meet the performance expectations of the Director for CTL. This position stays abreast of research and practice in evidence-based teaching, learning, and mentoring, as well as pilots and initiatives across the UW and at peer R1 institutions.
The instructional consultant position focuses on evidence-based remote & hybrid instruction. It also focuses on building and sustaining equity and access in online and traditional learning spaces. As such, collaboration with other units (e.g., Academic Technologies [AT] in Academic and Student Affairs [ASA] and Academic Experience Design and Delivery in UW-IT) in the support of faculty using centrally-supported teaching and learning technologies is essential. The position provides guidance on pedagogical and technological aspects of instruction for faculty who design and teach online courses that feature asynchronous as well as synchronous learning. It also provides guidance for faculty who design and teach hybrid courses, where some learning takes place online while some takes place in person.
Duties & Responsibilities
Instructional Consultation and Design (60%)
•Provide in-person and online consultations with faculty and instructors who seek assistance with the integration of evidence-based teaching with centrally-supported learning technologies for online and hybrid courses. Teaching and learning technologies and pedagogy in the creating of learning environments for their students. •Provide collaborative support with other instructional consultants and AT instructional technologists when solving complex requests related to the integration of instructional technologies in teaching and learning. This support can occur in the planning and development of new services, as part of programming offered by CTL, or in group faculty consultations. •Plan and facilitate sessions for faculty members, T.A.s, & graduate instructors on evidence-based teaching in online and traditional learning spaces. Co-plan and co-facilitate sessions with CTL & AT colleagues. •Co-design evaluative strategies and instruments to measure effectiveness of training, materials and courses.
Development and Support of CTL Programs (20%)
•Assist in the delivery of existing CTL programs including TA Program, Faculty Fellows Program, Technology Teaching Fellows Institute, Teaching & Learning Symposium, Evidence-Based Teaching, and the web sites. •Participate in the planning of new programs offered by CTL.
CTL Representative Duties and other duties (15%)
•Represent CTL on campus in meetings, special projects and other activities as requested by the director of CTL. •Represent the CTL at regional and national teaching and learning focused gathering and conferences as requested by the Director for CTL
Other Duties as Assigned 5%
•Master's Degree in Human-Centered Design & Engineering, Instructional Technology, Education or related field •At least 2 years of related experience. •Evidence of effective collaboration with academic and non-academic units. •Demonstrated effectiveness as a facilitator, instructor, co-facilitator, and/or co-instructor. •Ability and willingness to adapt to CTL mission, charge, & needs. •Excellent working knowledge of centrally-supported teaching and learning technologies at the UW. These technologies include learning management systems, lecture capture systems, personal response systems, and video conferencing systems. •Experience and expertise with designing and teaching sessions/courses with equity and access at their core. •Experience with communication and organizational tools employed by ASA and CTL including Slack, O365, Google Apps, and Trello.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
•Ph.D. in Human Centered Design & Engineering, Instructional Technology, Education or closely related field. •Work in collaborative, open office environment. •While the general working hours are within Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., this individual must be willing to adjust hours when necessary to accommodate the business needs and services of the office and as requested by his/her supervisor. •This individual must be available to support CTL events that will occur outside the normal work schedule.
