This position provides healthcare services typically performed by a physician, under the supervision of a physician; conducts complete physical examinations, provides treatment, and counsels patients; may, in some instances, prescribe medication.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs physical assessments/examinations.
Assesses and counsels patients and obtains medical histories.
Admits and discharges patients including appropriate notes and orders.
Evaluates patients on the inpatient floors for consultation for procedures within the scope of practice of the PA.
Evaluates patients for procedures done by Interventional Radiology and initiates preliminary discussion about procedures outside the PA’s scope of practice to facilitate the informed consent discussion by the radiologist.
Rounds on some inpatients previously treated by Interventional Radiology.
Monitors patient’s adherence to protocols.
Develops and implements adherence plans used with protocols.
Bills for professional services as permitted by the collaborative practice agreement.
Interprets diagnostic test results for deviations from normal.
Prescribes therapy or medications within the PA's scope of practice or with physician approval.
Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiograms, and laboratory tests.
Performs therapeutic procedures, such as central venous access insertion and removal, suturing, wound care, and infection management. Also performs procedures such as paracentesis, thoracentesis, diagnostic contrast studies plus catheter exchanges needed either therapeutically or for regular catheter maintenance.
Provides physicians with assistance during surgery or complicated medical procedures.
Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in service meetings and workshops.
Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objective, quality assurance programs, safety, environment, and infection control standards.
Graduate of PA program.
REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Current PA license to practice in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois, as applicable by state of work location, or ability to obtain within three months of date of hire. Certain/additional certifications may be necessary based on area of specialty; Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements).
Working knowledge of physician assistant theory and practice with one to three years of experience.
Organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
This position is full-time and works approximately 40 hours per week.

This position is in the Department of Interventional Radiology. This position is for the Medical School Campus and affiliated Hospitals (Barnes Jewish Hospital, Barnes Jewish West County Hospital and Missouri Baptist Hospital).
The hiring range for this position is $78,915 - $142,084 annually.
