University Health Service (UHS) Laboratory provides lab services for students, faculty and staff that utilize UHS for their healthcare.
To perform and evaluate various complex chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic, immunological and hematological tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
Laboratory Testing (95%)
Perform bacteriology testing, including organism identification and susceptibility testing
Perform parasitology testing
Perform hematology testing
Perform urinalysis testing
Perform serological, immunological, and immunochemical tests
Responsible for day to day quality control on all analyses performed.
Assist in instruction of new employees.
Consult with clinicians regarding correlation of test results with disease states.
Prepare cultures, reagents and solutions.
Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot the laboratory instruments.
Assist with inventory of supplies to facilitate maintenance of adequate stocking levels of reagents and equipment to support efficient laboratory operation.
Participate in Continuing Education activities and proficiency testing exercises.
Interact with Technical Representatives from suppliers of testing kits and reagents when questions arise regarding the way their tests are reacting or regarding the interpretation of results in order to determine and report the most accurate results.
Contact Technical Support when issues arise with instrument functionality, while consulting with or keeping the Laboratory Manager updated
Dispose of hazardous materials, including biohazards and chemical waste, according to proper protocol and procedures. Review safety manual and other safety materials yearly in order to perform laboratory procedures safely.
Participate in Laboratory Quality Improvement activities.
Practice Universal Precautions and follow all safety standards while working in laboratory
Write and update procedures.
Phlebotomy/Front Desk/Distribution (5%)
Perform phlebotomy duties according to established protocols.
Cover the Distribution area when necessary
Prepare specimens for laboratory testing in-house
Packaging and dispatching specimens to reference laboratories.
Track specimens out
Troubleshooting when necessary by collaborating with reference lab staff, UHS clinicians or clericals, or others to insure that laboratory test results are available in a timely fashion to support the clinicians in the diagnosis of disease.
Cover the Front Desk area when required
Check in patients
Provide patients with instructions for the preparation and collection of specimens for laboratory testing
Data entry to record the tests in the laboratory computer system
Answer the telephones and provide support to the clinical areas of UHS.
Other duties as needed
Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or other biological science
Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist certification or eligible for certification within 3 months of hire by American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent. If the certification is not acquired within 3 months from hire date, employment will be terminated. Certification must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.

One-year minimum of clinical laboratory experience
Experience with Sysmex Hematology Instrument
Bacteriology and General Lab experience
Experience working with Laboratory Information System (LIS)
Experience working with Electronic Medical/Health Record (EMR/EHR)
Some typing skills and knowledge of basic computing.
Relocation will not be offered for this position
This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery
This role is 32 hours per week
