The Department of History at the University of Washington seeks to appoint a full-time (100% FTE, 9-month service), tenure-track assistant professor who specializes in nineteenth-century US History and whose research and teaching explores questions that emerge from the era of the Civil War and Reconstruction. The successful candidate will hold the Donald W. Logan Endowed Chair in American History and will teach a regularly scheduled class on the Civil War and Reconstruction. Additionally, the successful candidate will develop introductory and upper-level undergraduate courses with capacity for large enrollments of diverse students and graduate seminars. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.
Applicants must demonstrate a record of teaching and research relative to nineteenth-century US history. We are particularly looking for a scholar whose research agenda, graduate mentoring, and undergraduate teaching experience will prepare students to think historically about matters of critical relevance today such as racism, slavery, emancipation, gender and sexual violence, and indigeneity. Corollary research and teaching interests might include: US imperial expansion, the liberal state and capitalist development, racial capitalism, the US-Mexico border, settler colonialism, constitutional and legal history, environmental history, religion, carceral regimes, and racial formations within and across regions. The candidate must have a Ph.D. in History or a related field, or foreign equivalent, in hand by the start date. The appointment will begin in September 2021.
