NATURE AND PURPOSE: This is a full-time, non-tenure, academic series position devoted to developing peptides with fluorescent molecular rotors (FMR) that fluoresce upon binding to specific proteins of interest. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program, it is generally assumed that individuals in this series will be supported by grant or contract funds, or recharge income. Appointees with this title may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Individuals in this series may submit grants by exception.
RESEARCH AND OTHER CREATIVE WORK 85% This position requires highly motivated and skilled project scientist to develop peptides with fluorescent molecular rotors (FMR) that fluoresce upon binding to specific proteins of interest. The candidate will have at least 10 years of post-graduation expertise in chemical synthesis including some of it in organic synthesis. The candidate is expected to design and execute synthesis of activated FMR dyes and of libraries of peptides coupled to FMR dyes; screen libraries with various proteins; sequence peptides of interest and conduct a full-scale synthesis of such peptides. The successful candidate will have expertise in structure activity relationship analysis (SAR), NMR and MS analysis. Some experience with proteins is desirable. The successful candidate will be a member of our dynamic, interactive research team and will engage in scholarly discussions with colleagues on new ideas and concepts. The candidate will work on organic dye and peptide synthesis and screen peptide libraries with protein binding partners. He or she will perform skilled procedures, collect, and analyze data, and prepare respective figures for scientific publications.
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE 10% Participate in appropriate professional societies and educational organizations, including taking a leadership role in organizations. Review papers and grant proposals and participate in service on research review boards. The candidate is expected to publish research results in peer-reviewed publications either independently or in collaboration with PI's team. The candidate will have to make presentations at scientific symposia and conferences.
UNIVERSITY/PUBLIC SERVICE 5% a) Engage in scholarly discussions with colleques on new ideas and concepts. b) Participate on committees at the department, school or campus level.
PhD in Chemistry.
At least 10 years of relevant research experience subsequent to obtaining PhD (i.e., general and organic chemical synthesis, as supported by recent publications).
Experience in designing synthesis of organic compounds
Expertise in designing and planning of research projects.
Experience in writing research papers and grant applications.
Skill in analyzing and evaluating data.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work both independently and as a team player.
