The Adult ED is a level one trauma center with 90 rooms capable of cardiac monitoring, including 5 resuscitation bays. The Emergency Critical Care Center (EC3), a 9 bed section of the Adult Emergency Department, offers specialized care for severely ill or injured adult emergency patients. Our Registered Nurses are capable of caring for patients who present with a variety of injuries or ailments, ranging from minor to life-threatening. Patient priority is determined by using the Emergency Severity Index System. Nursing staff will receive the specialized training necessary to care for patients within specific areas of our department, for example triage and resuscitation. Documentation occurs for all patients in an electronic medical record.
To assist the Emergency Department Nursing Services Director in planning and management of Emergency Department patient care services. To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, education and research. To assist in coordinating patient care services consistent with the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers mission and goals. Reports directly to the Emergency Department Nursing Services Director. Collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel. Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff as delegated by Nursing Services Director.
Responsibilities include: Personnel Management: Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff. Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff. Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff. Participate in the development, implementation and revision of individual performance plans. Facilitate open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff, and physicians. Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, members of the nursing leadership team and others. Anticipate and respond to staff issues and concerns. Collaborate with Educational Nurse Coordinators and Clinical Nurse Specialist to implement competency based education. Serve as a role model through the provision of direct patient care.
Clinical Practice: Maintain significant presence across all ED treatment areas rounding on patients, families and interfacing with staff to ensure patient care excellence.
Management of Clinical Area: Participate in the development and implementation of Department goals and objectives. Participate in development of Department policy/procedure and standards of Nursing Care. Participate in planning and problem solving of daily Department operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care. Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements. Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies. Participate in the monitoring of Department payroll and commodity expenditures. Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process. Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.
Quality Improvement and Research: Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities. Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff. Promote staff involvement in clinical research. Use lean management principles to optimize department operations.
Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
Educational Requirement: Applicant must meet ONE of the following: *Bachelors degree in Nursing OR *Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and a Masters degree in Nursing
Minimum of five (5) years RN experience.
Minimum of two (2) years of recent (within the last five years) RN experience in an Adult Emergency Department. Demonstrated leadership ability/potential including charge nurse, team leader or other management experience.

Previous Emergency Department supervisory experience. Masters prepared or Masters in process Certification in Emergency Nursing Evidence of ability to assess, interpret, and analyze clinical information independently and collaboratively Current practice reflects creative problem solving, communication and critical thinking skills needed to effectively manage patient flow, staffing resources and competing priorities to promote patient safety, patient satisfaction and staff engagement. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with multiple disciplines in a manner that fosters team building and provides visionary direction for team members. Current ACLS certification Current TNCC certification Critical Care Registered Nurse Certification Experience working with Electronic Medical Record. Computer competency including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Consultative and teaching skills. Knowledge of the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers policies and practices.
