Department of Architecture Professor of the Practice (NYC and Ithaca Locations))
The Department of Architecture in the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning at Cornell University invites applications for one or more Professor of the Practice positions; non-tenure track, renewable 3-5 year appointments.
Architecture at Cornell dates back to the founding of the institution; it is one of the oldest programs of its kind and has a long and distinguished tradition of design, scholarship, and teaching. Degree programs in the Department include a professional B.Arch.; a professional M.Arch.; a post-professional M.S. in Advanced Architectural Design (M.S. AAD); M.S. degrees in Computer Graphics and in Matter Design Computation; and a Ph.D. in the history of architecture and urban development. The new M.S. degree in Matter Design Computation and state of the art facilities, which include the recently-opened Milstein Hall designed by OMA and the Fine Arts Library, reflect both a continuing commitment to design excellence and innovation as well as an ongoing renewal of architectural education at Cornell.
The department is seeking candidates whose practice and body of built work advances contemporary architecture in the field and the academy. Candidates who demonstrate a commitment to collaborative engagement and the advancement of creative exchange in an urban context are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates should be able to articulate the discursive contributions of their practice in their body of work and must demonstrate excellence through national and international awards and honors, as well as publications.
The Professor of the Practice's teaching responsibilities may be based at Cornell's Ithaca campus, or, for the department's New York City programs, at our college's AAP New York City facility. In consultation with the department chair, the Professor of the Practice will have the responsibility for developing and offering design studios, lectures and elective seminars at post-professional, professional master's and bachelor levels.
While the Professor of the Practice position does not carry a research expectation, critical practice and scholarship activity are highly desirable. Professors of the Practice must maintain an active relationship to practice/research/creative work and are expected to share their expertise and experience with students and faculty to advance the mission of the department. The ideal candidate for a Professor of the Practice position should possess graduate and/or professional degrees in the field of architecture.
