The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is one of seven academic departments in Carnegie Institute of Technology, the engineering college at Carnegie Mellon. MSE has a long and distinguished tradition in materials education and research, and today our faculty continue to address the more important and exciting issues at the forefront of science and technology. Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary activity that applies the principles of basic sciences and engineering to understanding the behavior of materials, their development and applications. Both our undergraduate and graduate students are exposed to this interdisciplinary approach.
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the MSE department in the College of Engineering. In this role, you will support a research initiative to develop lead-free relaxor ferroelectrics with high recoverable energy densities and conversion efficiencies for electric vehicles and other pulse-power applications. This class of materials derives its large polarization response from chemical and structural heterogeneity within the crystalline lattice. Local structure and its response to electric fields will be studied by in-situ scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) accompanied by machine-learning-based image quantification. Ultimately, we aim to understand the spatial and temporal phenomena that control polarization in this important class of non-linear dielectrics. The research will make extensive use of the Thermo ScientificTM ThemisTM aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope and other analytical equipment within the Carnegie Mellon Materials Characterization Facility and will provide opportunities for collaboration with other faculty focused on machine learning and artificial intelligence. Results from the research program will be disseminated at international scientific conferences and in high-impact journals. You will also have the opportunity to develop teaching and mentoring skills in preparation for an academic career.
This research position is available beginning as soon as October 1, 2020.
Core responsibilities include:
Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies may be required depending on area and specialty
Participating/assisting in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations
Collecting and analyzing data, including periodical/literature search and utilizing specialized skills in related field to analyze the collected data
Conducting research experiments within the predetermined research scope and methodology of department and university
Other duties as assigned

You should demonstrate:
Expertise in aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and quantitative image processing and analysis.
Knowledge of ferroelectric materials and semiconductor physics
