Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility. The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the "glue" that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider. It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions. Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.
BNL has immediate openings for experienced Mechanical Engineers to design and build mechanical components, systems and equipment for BNL's new EIC. This includes large and small static and dynamic structures, high voltage and high current magnetic and electrostatic devices, components used in vacuum and cryogenic systems, RF components, lifting fixtures, and water/air cooled systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop components and component systems from initial concept through engineering analysis, detailed 3D modeling and design, design and safety reviews, preparation of specifications and fabrication drawings, procurement and fabrication, assembly, testing, installation, and commissioning
Manage engineering projects, and develop project plans including schedules with needed resources, and budgets
Provide engineering advice and direction in areas of expertise
Prepare design reviews and presentations
Work independently and collaboratively with scientific, engineering and other staff
May oversee and coordinate a variety of technical staff for design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and installation of equipment

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Marine Engineering
At least seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in the design of mechanical equipment and component systems
Experience with creative engineering projects, working hands-on with mechanical equipment, and collaborating with a team to develop and build unique equipment
Experience with 3D CAD modeling using Creo, SolidWorks, AutoCAD and/or Inventor
Experience with ANSYS (or equivalent thermal and stress engineering analysis software) and generating engineering analysis reports
Knowledge of material properties, manufacturing/machine shop processes, welding, hardware & component choice, manufacturing, installation, and dimensioning and tolerances
Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
Proficient with MS Office and MS Excel
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field
Experience with high vacuum devices, electrical, electronic, and/or RF systems, optical/laser systems, and electro-magnets
Knowledge of with ASME/ASCE standards, building codes, NFPA and OSHA requirements
Project development and management skills, proficient with MS Project
Professional Engineer license
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
Will be required to climb ladders for equipment installation and inspection
Will be required to become a qualified Radiation Worker
May be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights and/or weekends to support mission critical projects
