The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Junior Specialist in the Hariharan Lab, in the area of molecular genetics of growth regulation and development in Drosophila, at 100% time with an expected start date of 11/18/2020. The Hariharan Lab uses Drosophila to investigate the mechanisms that regulate tissue growth and regeneration.
Responsibilities: The individual will be expected to conduct a research project that investigates growth and regeneration of the Drosophila imaginal disc. Therefore the person will conduct genetic experiments in Drosophila that involve the setting up, execution and interpretation of genetic crosses. Many experiments involve the dissection of Drosophila larval tissues and adult tissues (specifically imaginal discs and adult flight muscles), their analysis by immunohistochemistry and visualization using confocal microscopy. The individual will use single-cell RNA seq data to generate hypothesis- driven genetic experiments. The hired person will prepare data for verbal presentation and figures and manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals. The person must be able to conduct research in a collaborative environment with an appreciation for lab safety and an environment that values equity, inclusion and diversity. The individual will be required to work in accordance with safety and social-distancing rules that govern research while Covid-19 is still a threat.
Minimum/Basic Qualifications required at the time of application: Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent international degree) or enrollment in a Bachelor's (or equivalent international degree) program.
Additional Qualifications required by the appointment start date: Bachelor's degree (or international equivalent).
Preferred Qualifications: Proficiency in Drosophila genetics, dissection of Drosophila tissues, immunohistochemistry and microscopy, basic molecular biology techniques, ability to design and interpret experiments, ability to prepare figures for manuscripts. Publication record in either peer-reviewed journal or in a preprint server such as BioRxiv.
