To provide the medical/nursing care to students at the MSMU Health Centers (Doheny and Chalon). Responsible for the coordination of student health services, basic ambulatory nursing care, health education, and assistance with supervision of patient care. Provision of screening services for students to support their progression to clinical placements. This full-time non-exempt position is a 36 hours per week position for 11 months annually (either August through June OR July through May).
Duties and Responsibilities:
Alternates as RN Coordinator in the general operation of the Student Health Center. Provide primary health care services including basic ambulatory care, first aid, vaccinations, TB skin testing, phlebotomy, physical assessments, health education and counseling.
Participates in the development of nursing policies and procedures, as requested.
Consults with the Nurse Practitioner (NP), off-site Medical Director, Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) Staff and off-campus physicians and/or specialists with regard to referrals, appointments, and follow-up treatment. Coordinate care between the Doheny and Chalon campuses by facilitating referrals and follow-up care.
Reports Communicable Diseases to LA County and work with Public Health officials in the event of a communicable disease outbreak.
Responds to health emergencies on campus and provide initial treatment for life-threatening and urgent situations.
Assists with the clearance and compliance of students in meeting matriculation and clinical affiliation requirements (DPT, Acc-BSN,A.D.N. and TBSN.) Process student health records for clearance. Work with Academic and Student Affairs for data accuracy.
Interacts with vendors for laboratory services and maintain clinic inventory and medical supplies. Monitor supplies and order as needed within clinic guidelines.
Serves as a resource for faculty and staff members with regard to health issues pertaining to students and campus wide health concerns.
Attends and actively participate in MSMU Student Affairs staff meetings.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Interacts with vendors for medical supply services when needed.
Assists in the training of Resident Assistants as needed
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Strong working knowledge of clinical nursing skills with an emphasis on college health, public health nursing, outbreak control and disease reporting.
Recommendation of childhood and adult immunizations, basic emergency care and triage; accurate medical documentation, medico-legal issues and health related regulations; health promotion and disease prevention.
Sufficient working knowledge of educational programming and event planning.
Abilities and Skills:
Effectively organize, prioritize and handle multiple tasks to meet established deadlines.
Build rapport and communicate/work effectively with a wide variety of people.
Must have critical thinking skills with the ability to prioritize and solve problems. Recognize life-threatening and urgent situations and respond appropriately.
Serve as a resource to faculty and staff members regarding student needs.
Analytical, detail-oriented and accurate.
Exercise sound judgment and decision making.
Appropriately counsel students regarding their physical and emotional health needs. The ability to work independently is crucial.
RN assessment, clinical skills and basic emergency care.
Graduate of an approved National League of Nursing (NLN) accredited school of nursing.
Two years' experience, preferably in a college health setting, ambulatory or acute care.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid RN Licensure issued by the California Board of Registered Nurses.
Work Location: Both Chalon Campus (West Los Angeles) and Doheny Campus (Downtown Los Angeles)
