The Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and The Miriam Hospital, Providence, RI, are seeking a Director of the Center for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine (CBPM). The position is responsible for ensuring that the Center remains a major national strength in the study of the association between behavior and health outcomes. Together with the Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center, the CBPM serves as the primary site for research and training in behavioral and preventive medicine at Brown University. Both centers arebased at the Miriam Hospital. CPBM currently includes 14 faculty members, most of whom have appointments in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, who are dedicated to patient-oriented health research. Their research areas include tobacco use and smoking cessation, maternal-fetal-infant stress, adolescent health, health disparities, physical activity promotion, stress management, complementary and integrative medicine (e.g., yoga, mindfulness, Tai Chi), sexual health and HIV risk reduction, alcohol and other drug use, medication adherence, mHealth, and coping with chronic illness (e.g., cardiovascular disease, HIV, chronic pain) although expertise in a different area of behavioral medicine (such as cancer or pediatrics) would certainly be appropriate.
The Director must be a nationally and internationally recognized behavioral scientist who qualifies for a faculty appointment at the rank of Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. The successful candidate must have the ability to: lead CBPM and strengthen its research portfolio, mentor trainees and faculty, facilitate training in behavioral medicine research, maintain their own externally-funded research program in any area of behavioral medicine, represent CBPM locally and nationally, maintain the research infrastructure of CBPM, and strengthen the academic and training environment of the Center. The Director must also be able to recruit other faculty members who can develop and maintain their own externally funded research. Prior administrative experience (e.g., a large research team, research center, or department) is highly desirable.
