Full Time Postdoctoral Fellow Position - (200000U7)
A Postdoctoral Fellow Position is available immediately to study signal transduction pathways downstream of insulin or IGF1 in adult skeletal muscle. Project to be carried out in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Maryland School of Medicine under the co-direction of Dr. A. Kontrogianni-Konstantantopoulos and Dr. Martin Schneider. Insulin/IGF1 signaling pathways will be monitored in isolated living adult muscle fibers maintained in cell culture and studied by live cell time lapse fluorescence confocal microscopic imaging using fluorescent fusion protein constructs of various signaling molecules that alter their subcellular distribution during the signal transduction events (cf SJ Russell and MF Schneider, 2020, JBC). Parallel studies will use biochemical techniques to monitor levels and phosphorylation status of enzymes in the signal transduction pathways. Molecular modification of the fluorescent fusion proteins will provide insight into the molecular basis of the various steps in the signal transduction pathway. These studies will provide important insights into novel pathways and molecular regulatory mechanisms underlying insulin and IGF1signaling for the control of both adult skeletal muscle mass and glucose metabolism in adult muscle, with additional possible relevance to similarities and differences with other insulin and/or IGF1 responsive tissues and to disruption of normal signaling in diabetes, muscle wasting and possibly other muscle disease conditions.
The successful candidate should have experience in cell culture, imaging and/or standard biochemical and molecular biological techniques. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to become current in the literature in the field, plan and conduct experiments, interpret data, and publish results. Applicants must possess a PhD, MD or equivalent health sciences degree, should have excellent oral and written communication skills, and display initiative as well as independence. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to attend and present his/her work in national and international meetings, be part of a muscle-interest group, participate in collaborative projects, and be trained in successful grant writing skills. Professional development will be encouraged, including career development planning.
