Position Summary: Reporting directly to the Occupational Therapy Program Director, the Capstone Coordinator supports the university in fulfillment of its mission, purpose and goals. Provides program-specific expertise and is actively engaged in relevant department initiatives. Supports university, campus, and/or departmental goals in order to assure compliance with programmatic accreditation and/or licensure, internal consistency, and graduate outcomes that meet student learning, workplace and placement expectations. Provides professional leadership and support and serves as an educator, role model, mentor, and facilitator. Facilitates doctoral level scholarship and innovation and assists students to develop, refine, and enact a capstone project ensuring doctoral-level academic rigor, fulfillment of standards, and professional relevance. Evaluates student performance and ability to integrate didactic knowledge, evidence, theory, professional communication, and reasoning with the planning and implementation of the capstone project. Serves as a liaison between the occupational therapy program and internship sites through the selection, orientation, implementation, and evaluation processes and nurtures the ongoing development of professional collaboration. Fosters professional collegiality with academic faculty, capstone project mentors, and on-site supervisors by providing training, education, and support throughout the capstone project process.
Position Responsibilities: INSTRUCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Fulfill assigned teaching load of 18 credits per year with 12 credits of reassigned time. A maximum of 6 credits can be taught per year and no more than 4 credits per semester
Participate in and contribute to assessment activities of courses/curriculum and program via a continuous improvement plan as set forth by the University
Demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching and the teaching/learning process and for individual students
Keep regular approved office hours (for FT faculty)
Mentor students and faculty as assigned by department/program dean/chair
Explore scholarly research to improve teaching and instruction
Begin to explore cross-disciplinary approaches to instruction
Attend professional development activities each year as agreed upon with supervisor in associate development plan
Select a minimum of one of the following activity areas: publishing & writing, acting as contributor to textbooks, presenting at conferences or educational trainings, attending test-writing or accreditation activities, serving on thesis dissertation committee or other agreed upon professional activityOR
Identify and apply specialized research or activities related to teaching, assigned teaching area(s), or may contribute to the scholarly community/knowledge of the discipline
PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND SERVICE:
Attend Department, College and University meetings/councils as arranged/approved by program director
Contribute/demonstrate ongoing service in at least one of the following areas:
Community or Public Service
Profession (member of professional organization)
University/Occupational Therapy program
Maintain NY State license and professional memberships
Demonstrate an active leadership role in University and in the Community or Profession
Other duties as assigned
Develop and maintain qualified internship sites recruitment and retention needed for culminating project. Maintain contracts between Occupational Therapy program, Compliance department and quality internship sites, including obtaining renewal signatures, explaining unique requirements of an internship site, and terminating contracts with internship sites unable to provide appropriate internship education
Identify internship sites which support the culminating project requirements. Maintain accurate internship site information database, including contact information and specific contractual agreement termination and expiration dates, and initiates renewal process timely. Evaluate insurance and liability issues related to clinical sites and provides appropriate documentation. Develop internship objectives in collaboration with the internship sites, faculty and onsite mentors
Supervise students completing internship rotations, including phone or on-site visits, mediating conflicts, establishing specific learning objectives, grading of assignments, determining and recording attendance, and assigning grades
Maintain communication with established internship sites and mentors through visits, telephone calls, e-mail and written correspondence to monitor students progress and internship needs. Coordinate a plan to best observe, instruct, and evaluate students learning
Serve as a liaison between the internship sites and the Occupational Therapy program. Work in a collaborative manner with ACOTE accrediting agency (Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education)Apprise internship mentors of student objectives. Work with internship mentors to clarify policies and procedures specific to facility. Validate with internship mentors the effectiveness of student placement and progress in meeting mutually established objectives Collaborate with the mentors at the internship sites on assignment of final grades for students successful passing of capstone defense
Perform other duties as assigned
Experience & Educational Background: EDUCATION
PhD from an accredited university with experience in curriculum development, research and supervision of graduate projects preferred
Should provide a documented background in educational methodology consistent with teaching assignments including but not limited to education theory and practice, or current concepts relative to specific subjects he or she will be teaching, or current clinical practice experience, or distance education techniques and delivery
Certified by NBCOT (The National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy) as an OTR (Registered Occupational Therapist) required
Licensed as an Occupational Therapist in the State of California required
Must meet and maintain the qualifications and standards set forth by any accreditation body that Yeshiva University is accredited by or in process of obtaining accreditation from, for area of expertise and expectations of faculty member as set forth in regulatory documents and any professional certifications deemed necessary to meet the requirements of the teaching role
Four or more years of full time documented (a minimum of 60 units; e.g. 20 3-unit course or their equivalent) teaching experience in an ACOTE accrediting agency (Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education) Occupational Therapy program. Instructional experience must be at institutions which are Title IV funding eligible OR
Six or more years teaching in a University (or College) settingWorking with online learning management systems to further engage the student learning process desirable
Minimum of two years of experience in clinical practice and experience in supervising internship students
Skills & Competencies: Knowledge of state, federal and local laws/regulations relating to programs, governmental compliance and other regulatory standards.
Ability to demonstrate clinical competency
Ability to maintain academic standards
Ability to work independently with general supervision
Ability to demonstrate a thorough, accurate and practical knowledge of their field or discipline
Ability to interpret and evaluate the theories of their field or discipline
Ability to effectively operate related equipment and machines for instructional purposes
Ability to manage and work effectively in a highly ethnic and culturally diverse student and associate community
Ability to use effective communication skills, both oral and written, including presentations and effective listening skills
Ability to use creative facilitation and conflict resolution skills to resolve difficult and sensitive issues
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite Products, especially Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and other MS office products as needed
