The Rockefeller University seeks a Mechanic to join Plant Operations. Under the direction of engineering management and the Lead Mechanic, the Mechanic I will operate and maintain the physical plant and University buildings to ensure a safe and efficient environment and will continually work towards and support the improvement of engineering services. Will complete all work and assignments safely and professionally, maintain communication with supervisors to ensure that all needed materials, tools, and supplies are available, and keep supervisors updated on projects. Will evaluate problems with equipment, plan repairs and modifications to equipment, locate original or alternate parts to be used in response to emergency situations, and switch to back-up equipment or shut down equipment as conditions warrant. Will keep accurate records of temperatures, loads, steam pressure, steam flow, and water analysis; read and interpret readings from meters, gauges, and other measuring units; and maintain a detailed log of each day's activities and problems that occur, ensuring this information is passed on to different shifts. Will maintain constant attention to overall operations of the physical plant and University buildings, assist other maintenance and engineering personnel when necessary in the completion of projects and repairs, respond to emergency calls for systems and equipment failure, and perform additional duties requested by the Chief/Assistant Chief Engineer and Watch Engineer to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the physical plant and University buildings.
High School diploma, equivalent, or trade school degree required. Must have a minimum of three years of working experience in power plant operations and preventative maintenance for a wide range of equipment and utility systems, including but not limited to boilers and auxiliaries, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC equipment as well as air handlers, domestic water, chilled water, hot water, steam, building exhaust, compressed air, controls, lighting, fire systems, etc. Three years of experience will be credited for an NYC Refrigeration license. Must be familiar with lubrication and other corrective and preventative maintenance repairs, be available for any emergencies and act in an engineering capacity to protect and preserve the physical plant and University buildings and its systems during an emergency, and act quickly and as responsibly as possible to return the facility to its normal operating status. Ability to speak, read, write, and communicate with individuals at all levels, both inside and outside the department effectively, carry out specific oral and written instructions, prioritize and organize work assignments, learn new tasks, coordinate, observe, make decisions, and meet deadlines in a detailed-oriented manner, and work independently without supervision required. Must have experience with boiler systems, absorption/centrifugal chillers/ process chillers with utility plant systems. An operations background desired. Must be able to work under stressful circumstances at times and be a clear thinker in pressure situations and exercise good judgment.
