The Creative Manager is part of the Marketing Solutions team at Vanderbilt University and is an individual contributor responsible for overseeing and facilitating the production of a wide array of creative materials for print and digital materials. This role will work closely with the Director of Creative Strategy to maintain key relationships, manage creative projects, provide art direction to flagship publications, synthesize and translate complex projects, determine graphic needs, and create designs and art elements for high-level projects. The Creative Manager will provide direction and quality control checks to vendors on work produced externally, and update templates for the on-line design template system.
The Marketing Solutions team, within the Division of Communications, is responsible for brand and creative strategy and the development and execution of discrete marketing campaigns and programs to advance the university's priorities and promote engagement with key constituents.
Duties and Responsibilities
Manage Creative Projects:
Support the Director of Creative Strategy in providing direction, feedback, and reviewing creative projects.
Collaborate with project managers, clients, and others to discuss ideas, note any alterations, budget limitations, deadlines, etc. before beginning production of materials.
Provide editorial art direction to magazines and other highly visible projects.
Assist and maintain relationships and communications with stakeholders.
Adhere to project deadlines and maintain clear and constant communication with project managers.
Ensure brand identity and messaging consistency across projects and channels.
Lead and participate in brainstorming sessions.
Manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
Design communication materials in a variety of formats.
Produce concepts, designs, layouts, and illustrations for a variety of communications materials for print, with particular expertise for producing for digital/web platforms.
Present and produce new and innovative ideas for utilizing design in the digital space.
Edit and refine designs and related art and text until a successful product is achieved.
Work with printers to prepare itemized written estimates for clients including specifications related to, design, layout, and cost of project materials including, paper, ink, printing, and other vendor related costs, ensuring that financial resources are effectively utilized.
Report time and work progress within the divisional project management tool.
Follow all department workflow and procedures for the editing, storage, transfer, and archiving of files.
Initiate and art direct photo shoots to produce art for inclusion in designs.
Produce infographics and related spot art.
Color correct images and prepare art for print or digital applications.
Guide and review work produced by external vendors.
In conjunction with the Director of Creative Strategy, provide consult to university clients during the startup phase of a project, offering input and guidance on the creative approach and deliverables.
Provide quality control checks on work received from vendors and ensure technical specifications and project goals are achieved.
Provide pre-press support and press checks for vendor work.
Archive materials and work produced by vendors.
Manage and maintain on-line design template system.
Respond to client feedback and adapt designs as necessary.
Maintain and update design templates for on-line design template system.
Provide overall support as needed and assigned for department priorities.
Demonstrate understanding of the university's mission, values, goals and priorities and an ability to ensure that all are considered in developing communications strategies.
Communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of audiences--including faculty, students, leadership, staff, alumni, suppliers and agencies.
