Assistant Professor - Hebrew Bible - Department of Near Eastern Studies
The Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a tenure-track position in Hebrew Bible at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2021.
Prospective candidates should have strong philological skills in biblical Hebrew and Aramaic as well as a methodological philological competence in dealing with the Bible's composite texts. A grounding in another relevant language of the ancient Near East is desirable. Engagement with scholarship in one or more other fields in the humanities and social sciences is also expected. These fields include (but are not exclusive to) literary criticism, anthropology, historiography, folklore, history of religion, history of sexuality. The holder of this position should be willing to enter into dialogue with scholars in other disciplines and with the faculty of Jewish Studies who work in later periods. The person appointed should have a demonstrable record, through course evaluations and other documentation, as an effective teacher.

Basic Qualifications (at the time of application): Applicants for this position must hold a PhD (or equivalent international degree) or be enrolled in a PhD or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application.
Preferred qualifications: *Mastery of the relevant stages of Hebrew and Aramaic. *Philological methods as foundation of research. *Some familiarity with at least one other ancient language.
