Northwestern University is seeking a temporary full-time Cage Wash Technician for the Chicago campus.
Temporary Job Description:
Under direct supervision, the Temporary Cage Wash Technician performs cage washing and caretaking duties, as well as essential equipment maintenance including cleaning and sanitizing cages and rooms. Before employment, one must be enrolled in the university’s occupational health program which entails filling out a health questionnaire. The health questionnaire is submitted to the university’s occupational health provider for review. Additionally, employment is based on completing and passing a job related background check. Must be able to maintain one’s physical condition that will assure efficient performance of tasks, which will be assessed by a physical examination before being employed. Specific responsibilities for this position include:
Cleaning and sterilizing cages, equipment, supplies, and rooms (primary and secondary enclosures);
Preparing refuse for disposal or incineration;
Maintaining efficient organization and flow of equipment through cage wash area;
Monitoring and maintaining washers and sterilizers in proper working condition;
Documenting and reporting equipment malfunctions to members of CCM management;
Maintaining proper record keeping of washer and sterilizer assurance testing;
Feeding and watering animals’ prescribed diets;
Observing animals regularly during the day, noting and reporting any variances in eating, drinking or deviation from normal habits, to include obvious health issues with behavior, skin conditions, etc.;
Observing and reporting changes in environmental parameters (i.e., temperature, humidity, lighting, etc.) to CCM management;
Assisting in maintaining records of animal ages, weights, inoculations, experimentations, breeding and other pertinent data;
Reporting all failures to follow CCM's SOP's to CCM management immediately;
Under direct supervision, transferring animals between buildings, cages, laboratories and holding areas;
Performing any related duties as required or assigned by CCM management;
Performing other related duties as required or assigned.
A high school diploma or GED or the equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired and ability to provide proof as such;
Valid state driver’s license if driving animal transport van.
Demonstrated receptive attitude to feedback, willingness to learn, and embraces continuous improvement;
Demonstrated ability to perform duties and responsibilities with attention to detail and support for organizational policies, as well as the ability to anticipate demands/pressures of assignments and adjust accordingly;

The ability to formulate realistic plans and define anticipated results;
Must be able to negotiate up to a 65 lb force (push pull) on an occasional basis. Lifting is limited to 50 lbs occasionally and 25 lbs frequently.
Must be able to work staggered shift schedule, overtime, weekends, and holidays as required.
Must successfully maintain physical condition that will assure efficient performance of tasks, including successful completion of physical examination.
This position requires the individual to be available to work on both the Chicago and Evanston campuses as coverage needs dictate.
Must be able to stand and walk around for several hours;
Position will require working with, near or around noise, moving mechanical parts, hazardous chemicals and biohazard waste. Regular exposure to laboratory animal caging and airborne particles, wet humid and hot cold conditions should be expected. Hearing protection and Personal Protective Equipment requirements must be followed.
