Dept Marketing Statement Student Health Services (SHS) is a full service medical facility offering clinical, educational, and psychological services to students on the UCSC campus.
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Clinical Operations Coordinator for Radiology and Clinical Support Services, the Medical Assistant performs a wide variety of patient care support services. The job requires the ability to work with a variety of clinicians with different styles and requirements. The ability to be flexible, maintain a professional demeanor, work closely with many people, and multi-task are critical components. In a fast-paced environment with many direct patient care duties as well as clerical duties, attention to detail is essential.
Working with ill students and concerned parents requires empathy and understanding. Patient confidentiality in all verbal and written communications is paramount. The critical thinking ability to recognize and respond to emergencies is required.
The Medical Assistant will:
Effectively perform multiple tasks such as simultaneously supporting several clinicians, monitoring patients, and managing phones and paperwork
Utilize tact, discretion and confidentiality in all communications with staff, students, families, and outside medical services
Identify self by name and title in all communication
Appropriately refer issues beyond scope of practice to clinical or supervisory personnel
Communicate issues of concern from patient or family to clinician
Maintain current CPR card and be able to recognize and respond to an emergency as appropriate per facility policy and training.

Job Duties 50% - Clinical
Utilizing medical background and training, and in accordance with department policies & professional standards, the Medical Assistant will perform all duties within the scope of practice of a certified Medical Assistant in California.
Screens patients on entry to the system
Obtains routine vital signs and independently anticipates the need for diagnostic procedures based on the patient's history and/or presenting complaint
Takes a basic medical history
Sets the patient up for examination
Appropriately documents in the medical record pertinent information obtained from patient
Provides educational information and emotional support in accordance with department guidelines as needed
Arranges follow-up appointments and referrals to other physicians or institutions as requested by clinician
Maintains Standard Universal precautions including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment and proper use of sterile techniques
Handles medical specimens for transport to and from laboratory
Assists with physical exams and medical procedures, including but not limited to, colposcopy, punch biopsy, incision and drainage (I&D), intrauterine device (IUD), nebulizer, toe nail removal, laceration repair
Independently and accurately documents client encounters in the Medical Record per Student Health Center policy
Makes return calls to patients and pharmacies as directed by clinician, which requires knowledge of various lab tests, many drugs, the appropriate dosages, etc. Speaks to pharmacists, and other physicians or their designee in a professional manner
Additionally, after thorough training and in accordance with departmental policy, independently performs and accurately records in the Medical Record: Laboratory & diagnostic tests, including but not limited to: pregnancy testing, urine dipstick, vision and hearing testing, pulse oximetry and peak flows, electrocardiogram (EKG), ear lavage
Administers medications as ordered by Physicians, PA's, or NP's; Administering medications means to inject, handle, or provide medications to a patient upon the order of an appropriate licensed staff member and consistent with current state regulations and training
Responsible for maintaining general cleanliness & order of work area by: Keeping exam rooms stocked with supplies, forms and patient handouts, as well as, maintaining inventory of all forms and supplies on hand; Maintaining clean, sanitary environment in exam rooms and work areas by daily cleaning and special cleaning according to infection control procedures; Understanding and utilizing Universal Precautions in dealing with patient care areas and equipment; Cleaning and sterilizing medical instruments employing various chemicals and operating medical autoclave per Student Health Center guidelines; Providing a clean and well-ordered area to insure medical specimens, dirty instruments are not mingled with 'clean area'; Maintaining paperwork, lab reports, messages, and patient records in such a way as to provide confidentiality of patient information.
50% - Administrative
Answers phone and screens calls, takes complete messages as appropriate and locates clinician to take call if Medical Assistant determines clinician should be interrupted
Makes and changes appointments for patients in person or on the phone
If indicated, provides quality assurance by keeping records of outgoing lab work and incoming results, including researching problems and contacting outside lab when results are not available, consistently communicating identified problems through the proper Health Center channels. Additionally, may include assisting in the Health Center procedure for logging and monitoring abnormal lab results requiring follow-up, contacting patients and making follow-up appointments.
Receiving of customers in the Student Health Center:
Tasks may include but are not limited to: Greet visitors; Direct incoming clients to the appropriate departments; Register students for Urgent Care and check in students for scheduled appointments; Directly interact with Triage and/or Charge Nurse for matters of patient acuity; Verify accuracy of current contact and insurance information; Provide educational information and emotional support in accordance with department guidelines as needed; Explain available services, basis for availability of care, eligibility requirements for service; Advise patients/visitors regarding policies, procedures and requirements; Explain basic billing and financial options
Graduation from Medical Assisting program and/or equivalent training and experience; Current Medical Assistant certification recognized by the Medical Board of California (See Special Conditions)
Knowledge of medical office procedures and equipment
Knowledge of medical terminology
Ability to recognize and respond to emergencies within the Medical Assistant scope of practice
Experience in administering injections
Excellent communication skills and the ability to relate information clearly and concisely to a variety of people on different subjects
Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively with professional and support staff
Ability to work under time pressures with frequent interruptions, with minute attention to detail
Ability to exercise discretion and tact in dealing with confidential information and sensitive situations with patients
