Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Director of Psychiatry for Counseling, Alcohol and Other Drug Assistance Program & Psychiatric Services (CAPS). This position is under the general supervision of the Director of Counseling, ADAP, and Psychiatric Services (CAPS). This position leads the Psychiatry team in providing psychiatric services for students. Services include but are not limited to psychiatric evaluations, medication management and psycho-therapeutic support.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Provides direct clinical care to late adolescent and adult university students.
Leads the Psychiatry team in providing high quality clinical care to adult/late adolescent students.
Assures that all team members fulfill service volume requirements document treatment appropriately.
Leads by example in providing care with knowledge of and sensitivity to issues of diversity and inclusion with the goal of creating an environment where students of diverse backgrounds feel included and welcome.
Serves on the Leadership Team and collaborates with other professionals within CAPS, Rutgers Student Health, and across the Student Affairs division.
Maintains awareness of current best practices in adult psychiatry and college mental health and leads the implementation of these practices at CAPS.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a M.D/ D.O.
Board certification in Psychiatry.
A minimum of least five years experience in psychotherapy and pharmacological management with young adults and adolescents.
Medical license registered in the State of New Jersey prior to start date.
DEA and CDC licenses prior to start date.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Evidence of interest in and skill in providing evidence-based, culturally sensitive psychiatric treatment for mental/behavioral health issues common among college students. These include but are not limited to mood and anxiety disorders, co-occurring disorders, eating issues, trauma.
Familiarity with developmental issues typical among college students.
Knowledge of and strong interest in issues of gender and gender identity and LGBTQ issues.
Competent and confident in managing high risk for suicide and violent behavior.
Demonstrated commitment to fostering an atmosphere of inclusion among staff and students of all backgrounds. Openness to continued learning about diversity and inclusion.
Experience in a supervisory role. Specialized expertise and/or experience in working with the LGBTQ community and with Students of Color strongly desired.
Demonstrated experience in areas relevant to work with University students seeking daytime on- call, walk-in services including: triage/rapid assessment; suicide and violence risk screening.
Skills necessary to conduct brief assessments and to offer guidance for students to pursue appropriate levels of care to address acute and/or persistent concerns (including inpatient, partial hospital and intensive outpatient levels of care).
Use of common software applications (e.g. Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), and Medicat, an electronic health record.

Generally quiet, comfortable but fast-paced office environment.
May involve extended periods of sitting.
