Essential Job Duties:
Reflecting the wide variety of functions performed by the Office of General Counsel and the dynamic nature of the university environment, the duties of this position involve both traditional paralegal activities and non-traditional, creative and technical activities. The successful candidate will be able to perform both types of activities at a high level.
Consistent with the standards articulated by the American Bar Association and the requirements of the North Carolina State Bar concerning paralegals, this position will perform traditional paralegal duties including, but not limited to:
Coordinating litigation efforts and activities (discovery, depositions, legal briefs, etc.) with the office of the North Carolina Attorney General
Proofreading, drafting, and finalizing various correspondence, legal documents, and reports
Assisting with mass document production that involves analyzing, cataloging, and copying correspondence, policies, and other exhibit items
Handling bankruptcy and collection matters
Researching legal issues; and performing computer assisted legal research
Assisting in-house counsel with compilation of materials and response to administrative complaints filed with government agencies (e.g., EEOC, OCR, OAH-CRD, DOL)
Conducting routine and specific legal and factual information research and data compilation, as directed by attorneys
Performing preliminary document review of contracts and settlement agreements
Researching public records online and via communication with state and local officials
Maintaining the confidentiality of office records and communication
Assisting with transactions, including preparing and maintaining documents and files
Assisting the University Records Officer with compiling and preparing responses to public records requests
Equally important, this position will perform non-traditional, creative, and technical activities in support of the outreach activities of the Office of General Counsel. These duties may include, but are not limited to:
Preparing presentations, slideshows, newsletters, and other educational materials in connection with seminars and training sessions;
Designing, creating, and editing websites and other online resources, portals, and tools for use and reference by the campus community; and a variety of other projects as assigned.
The paralegal position reports to the Vice Chancellor and General Counsel.
Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Proof, draft, and finalize various correspondence, legal documents, and reports.
Assist with mass document production that involves analyzing, cataloging, and copying correspondence, policies, and other exhibit items.
Provide support to the University Compliance Steering Committee, Compliance Officials Working Group and Professional Sports Counseling Panel.
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Completion of an accredited paralegal program; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Experience or strong interest in graphic design.
Must be able to work efficiently in a high-pressure and deadline environment.
Knowledge of presentation software programs such as Prezi.
Experience using document management systems, such as Worldox.
Knowledge of United States Bankruptcy procedures for Chapters 7, 11, and 13.
Knowledge or experience using the Wake County Electronic Filing System.
Proficiency with PACER (or similar software).
Strong knowledge of Federal, State and Local Rules of Court, the Federal and State Rules of Civil Procedure, the North Carolina General Statutes and North Carolina Administrative Code.
Ability to read, interpret and consistently apply laws, policies, procedures and guidelines.
Excellent computer knowledge and intermediate skill level with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat Professional.
Exceptionally well organized, resourceful, detail oriented and pay extremely close attention to detail.
Excellent interpersonal skills, in person and over the telephone.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Professional work habits and office demeanor.
Must exhibit excellent work habits.
Demonstrated critical thinking, proficiency in problem-solving, sound judgment, and decision making skills.
Graduation from an accredited school of paralegal training and professional paralegal experience, preferably with a law firm or an equivalent combination of education and experience is strongly preferred.
Required license or certification:
Paralegal certification from the North Carolina State Bar, NALA, or NFPA; or equivalent license or degree.
Completion of an accredited paralegal program.
