Under the direction of the Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) attending physician, and in addition to performing operational-level assignments, the Physician Assistant (PA) provides primary medical management for oncology/BMT patients (inpatient). Leads by example demonstrating professional image and leadership core competencies. Acts as a liaison within the BMT Program to promote consistent medical management of the patients across the health care continuum by collaborating with the multidisciplinary care team.
Performs specialized procedures such as bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture and skin biopsy. Presents patient cases during daily rounds and at the weekly BMT Clinical meetings. Provides patient/family and staff education. Participates in and/or initiates research. Participates in community outreach and networking with community physicians and other health care professionals. May provide care to BMT patients in the outpatient setting at Moores Cancer Center. Develops and expands role responsibilities as patient and system needs change.
Current State of California Physician Assistant (PA) license.
Current Physician Assistant Certification from NCCPA.
BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six (6) months of hire date.
DEA Registration Certificates. Must have successfully completed or commit to complete within six (6) months of hire the Controlled Substance Education Course by the California Academy of Physician Assistants.
Minimum six (6) months of licensed working inpatient PA experience; including oncology and/or adult critical care experience. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice work experience must be within the past two (2) years.
Thorough knowledge of BMT process and hematological blood cancers, including knowledge of pathology of patient population, expected outcomes, normal and abnormal lab results.
Thorough knowledge of administration of chemotherapy and other common blood & marrow transplant medications.
Proven experience performing initial history and physical examination; identifying major medical problems, and formulating appropriate plans of action.
Demonstrated experience performing diagnostic tests, exams, procedures used in adult medicine. Knowledge of the purpose of these tests and infection control mechanisms.
Strong experience providing patient education and counseling and developing and implementing long and short range treatment plans. Comfortable in a group teaching setting.
Proven ability to interact effectively with diverse population, including professional and non-professional staff. A high level of professionalism and excellent communication skills.
Proficient computer skills and knowledge of PCIS/EPIC for retrieval of patient data (Computer skills required; PCIS/EPIC preferred).
Excellent organizational skills in order to rapidly prioritize activities in a high-volume, dynamic, multiple demand hospital setting.
Critical thinking skills and experience independently solving problems and making recommendations. Ability in documentation of patient conditions and outcomes.
Exhibits willingness to develop and expand role responsibilities as patient and system needs change.
Ability to understand the medical as well as psych-social needs of a patient population with cancer.
Strong leadership skills with ability to motivate team members. Ability to function as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Experience with related procedures such as bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture and skin biopsy.
Per diem shift requirement is an average of 1 shift per week per 4-week schedule. Must be available 2 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule and a minimum of 1 holiday. This is subject to change based on department needs.
Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment.
Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call and locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center's business needs.
