This research position will advance the development of microfluidic technologies and ex vivo retinal explants studies to evaluate the synaptic integration of stem cells transplanted into adult, light-damaged mouse retina. The researcher will characterize the performance of the system and evaluate its translational potential for ophthalmology. compare it to current standard liver cell culture systems. These studies will therefore provide a stepping stone towards future clinical application of engineering strategies to advance retinal transplantation. It is expected that the work will yield several high impact academic publications and presentations at national/international conferences.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Must hold a doctoral degree in biomedical engineering or related field.
Requires experience with microfabrcation and testing.
Candidate must be knowledgable with confocal microscopy, cell culture, immuno-cytochemical and -hystolotical staining. Expertise with matlab and comsol required.
Experience with microfabrication and microfluidic design are required in order to develop new systems that mimic the in vivo environment of adult retina
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A doctoral degree in biomedical engineering or related field.
Certification in wet lab chemical safety and handling is required.
Although experimental design will be validated with the PI, candidate is expected to develop his/her own experiments, which involves choosing the input and output parameters, experimental systems, appropriate controls, number of replicates for statistical relevance.
Photolithography reagents and equipment. Confocal Microscopy and associated software.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Researchers must be able to operate in a clean room facility and spend several hours per day standing in the lab performing experiments.
