The Washington National Primate Center has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 1.
The primary purpose of this position is to provide the appropriate environment to support outstanding biomedical research directed towards significant human health issues and nonhuman primate (NHP) health and biology. Under the general direction of the Manager of Program Operations/Vet Services Supervisor, the Research Scientist/Engineer 1 will provide care to the research animals and ensure that procedures and daily activities are performed in accordance with associated protocol and regulatory requirements. Not only will this position provide support via clinical care of experimentally manipulated animals, they will also provide technical support for actual experimental procedures. Some examples of projects include but are not limited to the following: development of effective vaccines against HIV/AIDS via the oral mucosa, investigation of the effects of antibiotics on microbial communities and mucosal immunology of the GI tract and research of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) targeting HIV resistant cells.
This position performs continuous surveillance for all the research animals for clinical signs of diseases, training new hires, data management, and high level oversight of care required for animals on multiple projects. This position ensures all animals undergoing experimental surgical procedures are properly screened. This position also coordinates, plans, executes, and documents post surgical care: analgesics, monitoring, technical support during sample collections, surgical procedures, anesthesia, blood draws, swab collections, bone marrow draws, administration of research medications, and assists with necropsies.
RESPONSIBILITIES: •Generate, schedule, and execute course of treatments for research animals •Collect samples for research purposes, document specimens taken into a database •Collaborate with PIs on all aspects of animal care for new and ongoing research protocols •Surgery support (anesthesia, assist with major surgeries, perform minor surgeries) •Surgery facility maintenance, cleaning of anesthesia machines, surgical instruments, and monitoring equipment •Collect and document data •Lead for team of vet specialists, guide work of others •Manage all controlled drugs inventory and detail record keeping •Oversee Veterinary Services inventory and procurement •Provide training to staff and ensure adherence to SOPs, participate in all training activities necessary for performance of the job
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in Biology or related and 1 year of experience in the following:
•Excellent organizational skills and flexibility to work in an environment with constantly shifting and occasionally conflicting priorities; •Ability to work with minimal supervision as well as collegiality within diverse groups, following established guidelines; •Ability to take direction and communicate effectively with others; •Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgement in sensitive situations; •Ability to generate and maintain accurate, detailed records using appropriate medical language; •Independent computer skills, including basic skills to use email and navigate on the internet; •Be able to assist veterinarians in all situations; •Proficiency in drug calculations, formulations, and dilutions.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE •Experience administering and monitoring anesthesia in animals and performing other veterinary technical procedures; •Professional certification - Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) •Graduate of an AVMA-accredited veterinary technician program or licensed veterinary technician; •Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of non-human primates •Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
Environmental Working Conditions: •Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and carry 30 pounds •Physical ability required to do the work •Must be available to work some weekends and holidays and provide facility coverage for employees who are absent •Employment is contingent upon successful completion of health assessment at the UW’s Employee Health Clinic. The health assessment may include but is not limited to tuberculosis clearance, measles clearance, serum banking, and immunizations, such as tetanus and rabies, physical exam and/or review of work health history, x-rays, and/or assessment to wear positive or negative respiratory protective equipment. These health assessments will be repeated periodically during work assignment. Specific precautions may include wearing respirators and/or protective clothing. •Employee is personally responsible for following health & safety and security policies and procedures •This is an essential position. The employee is expected to report to work under conditions that other employees are not required to report to work, such as inclement weather and UW campus suspended operations. •Punctuality and regular attendance are critical components of this position.
