: The Department of Modern Languages (ML) is dedicated to providing students with a wide range of opportunities to study languages and cultures, to enhance their knowledge and appreciation of traditions, customs, and issues while building their proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. Through studying the languages and worlds of others, our students gain a valuable international perspective that enhances their life personally and professionally in our multicultural society
The objective of this position is to promote the Department of Modern Languages by reaching out to students, alumni, the CMU community, and the local community and beyond by publicizing ML events, establishing social media outlets, and developing PR materials. The Communications Specialist will work closely with the Department Head to assure ML's and CMU's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is infused throughout all communications materials. This is a fixed-term position for a duration of 1 year, with a possibility of extension.
Your primary responsibilities will include:
* Seeking out and developing ways to advance the visibility of the department * Creating and enhancing content for the department website and various publications * Finding new and exciting ways to tell the story of the Department of Modern Languages * Developing PR materials for recruitment to graduate and undergraduate programs and for advancement purposes. * Establishing and maintaining social media outlets to increase dynamic engagement and interaction * Working directly with faculty, staff and students to develop promotional posters and stories * Maintaining regular contact with alumni, including managing the alumni database * Writing articles for high-profile department events * Training and supervising student workers recruited to assist with department publicity and outreach efforts * Supporting the communications aspect of recruitment for departmental undergraduate and graduate programs
Other duties will include:
* Coordinating events, including managing travel arrangements and itineraries of visitors and arranging catering for receptions * Arranging catering for monthly department meetings * Providing administrative support to the department's outreach programs * Other duties as assigned
You must demonstrate:
* Exceptional writing and editing skills * Strong organizational and interpersonal skills * Must be able to work well with a team and independently. * Excellent time management and prioritization skills * Must be able to work well with frequent interruption, work under pressure, and meet inflexible deadlines. * Must be flexible and be able to adapt well to new situations and evolving priorities. Must use discretion with confidential and sensitive materials.
A bachelor's degree is required. A degree in communications, public relations, marketing or media relations is preferred.
A minimum of 1-3 years of experience in the following areas are required:
* Managing social media platforms in a professional setting, with a clear understanding of the effective use of social media channels to share news and engage audiences * Experience writing and editing articles or announcements to large audiences
Demonstrated experience with or interest in languages and cultures is strongly preferred Experience with public relations or marketing in a higher education setting is preferred
