The University of Maryland School of Medicine has an opening for a Laboratory Animal Research Assistant in the Comparative Medicine Program. The primary duties are directly related to providing laboratory animal clinical and research support. This position will assist veterinarians in diagnosing and providing treatment to animals in the facility 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

This position will require a five (5) day a week schedule with one (1) working day during the weekend.
Perform technical services such as administering treatments, obtaining biological samples, providing pre/postoperative care, and euthanasia on a wide variety of species.
Perform routine laboratory maintenance and research activities per established department SOPs, study/IACUC protocols, and in compliance with GLP regulations.
Activities may include but are not limited to: general housekeeping, daily observations of animal health, collection of cultures and biological specimens, administration of pharmaceuticals and nutrients, including anesthesia, performing euthanasia and post-operative care.
Administer or assist in the administration of a health monitoring program including diagnostic collection.
Perform or assist with specialized veterinary procedures such as physical examinations, treatments, surgery, intubation and anesthesia monitoring, euthanasia, and radiology/radiation delivery, for a wide variety of species 365 days/year.

Perform or assist with maintenance of animal health records, requisitions, USDA receipts and dispositions.
Perform or assist in the training of animal care and research personnel.
Maintain detailed, accurate, and legible records for all animal procedures performed and instrumentation employed to comply with the Guidelines of Good Laboratory Practice.
Perform administrative duties such as: assisting in developing policies, studies, procedures and/or methods for laboratory experimentation; and ordering supplies.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in biology, agriculture, veterinary science, or field of study related to the animal science. Experience working with and handling a variety of animal species is preferred.
Associate's degree in biology, veterinary science, or field of study related to animal science. Two (2) years of experience working with animals in a research laboratory setting or in an animal hospital.
High School Diploma/GED. Four (4) years of experience working with animals in a research laboratory setting or in an animal hospital.
Preferred: Prior experience working with animals in a research laboratory setting or in an animal hospital is preferred. Previous muscle research experience is preferred.
Responsibilities may include working with bio-hazardous agents.
The Hiring Range is in the low to mid $40,000s, commensurate with education and experience.
