The Department of Chemistry at ETSU operates laboratories that support instruction of over 700 undergraduate students each semester along with the research activities of 12 faculty and approximately 30 graduate students. Safe, efficient and effective operation of these laboratories is vital to the mission of the Department and ETSU.
The Manager is responsible to the Department Chair for: (1) operational management of teaching laboratories, including safety, procurement, experiment preparation, inventory control, waste disposal and maintaining readiness; (2) supervision of laboratory support staff; (3) serving as Chemical Hygiene Officer; (4) providing safety training and oversight for students, faculty and staff; and (5) serving as the primary interface to the ETSU Offices of Environmental Health & Safety and Facilities Management.
The Manager will assist the Chair in promoting a safety culture to protect faculty, staff and students by performing hazard assessments; developing and overseeing activity-based chemical hygiene plans; reviewing chemical purchases and overseeing chemical inventories; performing safety inspections; and training students, faculty and staff in safe use of chemicals and apparatus.
Position is contingent upon sufficient funding.

Bachelor’s degree in physical or life science from an accredited university.
Demonstrated knowledge of chemical safety and hygiene.
One year of laboratory experience in an industrial or academic setting (related part-time, student worker, graduate assistant experience may be considered).
Certification as a Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO), or education sufficient to obtain certification after work experience.
