The Fisheries Collaborative Program (FCP) help fosters research collaborations between National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientists, UCSC faculty, IMS researchers, and students. The research activities of the FCP include field and laboratory experiments, modeling, and computational studies, which involve marine and freshwater species and habitats where comprehensive studies are being conducted on the ecology and life history of Pacific salmonids and other fishes. The FCP serves to support and resource managers and fisheries and resource science in general.
Under the direction of an assigned UCSC IMS Research supervisor (see IMS Research Cluster Groups at https://ims.ucsc.edu/research/cluster-groups/index.html) and NOAA Science Advisor(s), the FCP project scientists will contribute high-level skills to make significant and creative contributions to various research projects by designing and implementing field or laboratory based studies; managing and analyzing large and complex datasets; and, contributing to presentations, agency reports, and peer-reviewed publications (as a co-author or in some cases lead author). Some senior FCP project scientists supervise research personnel and/or serve as grant/contract Principal Investigators (PIs) with the permission of the divisional dean and Office of Research.
Applicants with expertise in any of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply: population modeling, analysis of animal movement, tagging and tracking of aquatic species, species interactions, habitat analysis, predator-prey relationships, impacts of climate on marine organisms, computer programming (e.g., MATLAB, R, etc.), database management, and/or statistical analysis.
SALARY Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in fisheries sciences and management, marine biology and biological oceanography, ocean/marine sciences, oceanography, ecology, evolutionary biology, environmental science, biology, or a related field; or a Master's degree in the previously listed fields of study plus four years' research experience (achieved post Master's degree) relevant to the advertised position. Degree requirements must be met at the time of application.
Experience contributing to field or laboratory studies in the areas of fisheries biology, marine science, oceanography, climate variability, natural resources management, or related field (experience may have been obtained while completing doctoral degree).
POSITION AVAILABLE Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit's need and the availability of funding.
DURATION OF POSITION Initial appointment will be fulltime for one year. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.
