The College of Medicine (COM) at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) seeks an outstanding and dynamic leader for the position of Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion.
Position Overview and Responsibilities: We are seeking a current COM faculty member with a record of leadership and a demonstrated commitment to diversity. Responsibilities of this position in the first year include :
Assembling a team of leaders to develop a strategic plan with metrics to increase diversity and inclusion in the COM for the next 3 years
Establishing and overseeing a database with multiple measures of diversity of faculty and trainees
Coordinating COM initiatives with ongoing campus efforts toward increasing diversity; inclusive of work on awareness and compliance by the Office of Equity and Diversity, and the campus Quality Enhancement Plan of Social Determinants of Health
Advising/helping the COM:
Office of Student Affairs and Admissions ongoing efforts/initiatives; inclusive of increasing student diversity, pipelines, unconscious bias training for admissions committees
Office of Medical Education; inclusive of related curriculum revisions
Office of Faculty Affairs; inclusive of faculty development, recruiting, pipelines
Office of Graduate Medical Education ongoing efforts in diversity and inclusion
Office of Research to address diversity and inclusion efforts in their strategic plan
Meeting quarterly with students and residents/fellows to discuss ongoing efforts and their concerns
Serving as Chair of the COM Diversity and Inclusion Think Tank Committee
Working with UTHSC and COM communications experts to establish a COM Diversity and Inclusion website. This site will include a resource library with relevant reference materials to support ongoing leadership and management training linked to implementation of organizational strategic plan activities (AAMC, AMC)
Hosting multiple yearly symposiums related to diversity and inclusion
Serving as the UTHSC COM Designated Representative to the AAMC Group on Diversity and Inclusion; attend and participate in related AAMC programming
The Associate Dean reports directly to the Executive Dean of the College of Medicine, Scott Strome, MD. This position will require 20-30% effort with a corresponding decrease in clinical, teaching and/or research effort.
The successful candidate must currently be a UTHSC COM faculty member in good standing, have leadership experience, and have a demonstrated record of commitment to diversity. An MD or DO degree is preferred, but not required. However, the successful candidate must be well informed on clinical issues and the training progression for an MD or PA degree.
In addition, the individual should have:
Strong organizational and managerial skills
Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work with students and faculty
Strong commitment to teamwork
