A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. William DePaolo in the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine at the University of Washington. This is a full-time position on an annual, 12 month appointment. DePaolo Lab aims to explore the how intestinal perturbations caused by genetics and/or environmental factors (e.g., diet, infection, pollution) alter its microbial landscape and to use this knowledge to develop strategies and therapies to treat human disease. The DePaolo lab is seeking a postdoctoral candidate at the Postdoc Scholar level that will be enthusiastic about collaborative, cooperative, and interdisciplinary research, be motivated to continuously develop as an independent scientist, have strong research skills in all aspects of the research process, possess leadership and management skills, and demonstrate excellent scientific communication skills and identifying, applying and securing independent funding.

The ideal candidate will possess the skills and desire needed to facilitate a productive and cohesive team, mentor and motivate trainees and junior lab members, manage day-to-day lab operations to ensure that the lab runs smoothly and safely, establish meaningful collaborations, and pursue leadership opportunities within the lab and the UW research community.
You must be able to thrive in a lab that is often all-hands-on-deck and therefore, be willing to roll-up your sleeves and be able to successfully handle multiple projects and tasks at once while maintaining a professional and compassionate demeanor. While candidates should be excellent leaders, they should also know and understand what it takes to be part of a team.
The right candidate will demonstrate effective and dynamic communication skills in all forms - listening, writing, and speaking. You should be able to effectively communicate in all forms to all levels including colleagues, faculty, trainees, and the general public. You should also understand and value the difference between writing for grants, manuscripts, posters, etc.
In addition to writing, you should be able to design impactful visual presentations and posters for lab meetings, work-in-progress meetings, poster sessions, and symposia on a local and national level.

Qualified candidates will also possess solid investigative skills when searching for relevant literature and have a good understanding of the processes for grant and manuscript submission.
DePaolo Lab seeks a PhD with experience in one or more of the following fields of study: immunology (with special emphasis on mucosal immunology), microbiology, or microbial ecology with high quality first-authored publication(s).
