Linux Systems Administrator - Information Technology Services 15348
The department of Information Technology Services at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a Linux Systems Administrator. This position is responsible for the installation, operational support, and maintenance of Linux systems, software, and associated infrastructure. Proven experience in system automation and cloud technologies is essential.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Install, configure, and support of Linux based systems. This includes patches, fixes, compilers, software, and other utilities.
Be responsible for establishing and maintaining appropriate monitoring and alerting across ITS infrastructure to ensure system availability.
Participate in an on-call rotation to deliver support to end users, address operational issues, coordinate vendor support, and internal escalation of events.
Perform other necessary and appropriate tasks as directed by ITS management.
Design and author automation processes using shell scripts, Ansible, GIT, and CI/CD pipelines.
Work with users/stakeholders to instruct and advise in automating their workloads.
Collaborate and help build utilities and tools for internal use that enable Systems Engineering to operate at high speed and wide scale.
Identify and help drive improvements to technical processes.
Participate in meeting WVU's goals of migrating operations to cloud infrastructure. Typical tasks include migrating physical systems to virtual, migration of on premises systems to cloud, monitoring resource consumption to ensure proper sizing, refactoring legacy systems to use modern cloud native technologies, etc. This will be done as a team effort with Systems Engineering, Cloud and Virtualization Services, and Infrastructure Architects.
Help identify and help drive improvements to technical processes.
Learn and leverage groundbreaking technologies.
Collaborate in projects led by the Project Management Office requiring Systems Engineering work and availability. This includes collaborating with other ITS groups, vendors, and customers across WVU to gather requirements and successfully complete the project.
Independently and/or part of a team, aid in the definition/design/cost benefit analysis of the University's enterprise architecture and/or projects and in the assessment of technical risks relative to system implementation/deployment/support; Identify technologies that are necessary to implement a project; provide architectural direction and promote the sharing of architectural constructs and frameworks across projects within an organization.
Develop and maintain a considerable understanding of stakeholder's business requirements.
Independently and/or part of a team aid in the design of system architecture and related infrastructure to ensure systems have appropriate performance monitoring/alerting, backup and recovery capabilities and tested to deliver timely issue resolution and appropriate availability based on the business impact of the environment.
Bachelor's degree (B.S. or B.A.) in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or related field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Four (4) years experience in Unix/Linux Systems Administration. Recent Red Hat Enterprise Linux experience strongly preferred.
One (1) year experience in virtualization and/or cloud technologies and administration.
Self-motivated and self-directed while demonstrating the ability to prioritize competing tasks/projects.
Strong desire to learn, assess, apply whether about technology, people, processes, academia landscape, etc. Good written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently with little supervision or as a member of a project team.
Ability to develop effective working relationships with peers and other University organizations and vendors on local, regional, and national levels.
Good organization skills.
Linux/UNIX Experience configuring, managing, or troubleshooting systems of scale (cloud, virtualization, distributed networks, colocation.)
Proficiency with a scripting language (Shell, Python, PowerShell, etc).
Experience with source code revision control (ex. Git, Subversion, Mercurial)
Experience in Networking (e.g. Deploying and troubleshooting LAN, VPN, Firewalls, TCP/IP etc.)
Technical problem investigation, complex analysis, and finding/implementing solutions in a timely manner.
Ability to use VMware, AWS, and Azure technologies.
Understands and implements best practices surrounding system design and business process documentation.
Develop/Maintain advanced level knowledge of UNIX/Linux-based technologies both industry-wide as well as those used within WVU and ITS. Supplement with knowledge/experience from other non-UNIX based technologies to round out overall knowledge and increase confidence in any chosen technical solution.
Red Hat systems administration knowledge particularly around recent Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions.
Recognized leader of UNIX/Linux systems administration. For example: configuration of mail systems, system installation and configuration, file system management, printing systems, data security, installing third-party software. Experience with system & network security (for example: building firewalls and deploying authentication systems).
Ability to review host security parameters and ensure compliance with security policies. (for example: passwords, uids/gids, file permissions, file system integrity, use of security packages such as lpfilter/iptables, with the ability to evaluate and recommend newer technologies such as VMWare's Advanced Networking - NSX and AWS services.)
Maintain an active awareness of the current IT industry security landscape, ability to translate how known vulnerabilities affect WVU, and work/assist a plan of action to patch/mitigate as appropriate.
Ability to provide end user support.
Ability to develop, implement, and maintain Server Recovery procedures.
Ability to size and configure UNIX/Linux servers.
Windows Server administration experience.
Experience with Configuration Management Software (ex. Chef, Ansible, Puppet).
A valid Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), or the ability to acquire the RHCSA within the first year of employment.
Additional certifications relevant to Linux/UNIX, Windows, AWS, VMware, Azure administration or related technologies are preferred, but not required.
