Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
A Sr. Research Specialist is sought to carry out independent projects, make research project decisions that may alter research objectives and direction in the Holland laboratory at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The Holland laboratory is interested in the molecular mechanisms that control accurate chromosome distribution and the role that mitotic errors play in human health and disease. Our work utilizes a combination of chemical biology, biochemistry, cell biology and genetically engineered mice to study pathways involved in mitosis and their effect on cell and organism physiology. The Sr. Research Specialist will also provide general support to the laboratory by training new students and performing general laboratory tasks. Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Apply knowledge and skills gained through education and experience to make intellectual contribution and to pursue independent research projects in the interest of the laboratory’s scientific objectives.
Develop, design and manage substantial research projects. Perform experimental techniques including genetically manipulating human cell lines, genome editing, mouse husbandry, cloning and sequencing plasmid constructs, molecular biology techniques, microscopy, Co-IP and in vitro biochemical assays.
Design, optimize and execute new experimental protocols. Apply independent judgment in conducting experiments and evaluating next courses of action.
Maintain database, perform data analysis, evaluate results, prepare graphs/charts/figures,and cintrubyte ti wrutung peer-reviewed publications and grants.
Perform general laboratory support such as managing and organizing laboratory equipment, monitoring inventory levels, ordering materials and supplies, preparing specialized buffers and reagents to support all lab members, operating and maintaining basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, incubator, spectrophotometer, light microscope.
Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
Four (4) years experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Master’s degree majoring in biological sciences or a related field.
Independent research project not related to normal course requirements strongly preferred.
Experience with cloning/molecular biology and/or mouse models preferred.
