Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
Harvard Business School seeks to enable scholars, educators, and practitioners to learn from the past by providing rich and nuanced evidence on the key issues faced by the world today. We are seeking a curious and motivated individual to serve as a Research Associate and work closely with a faculty member in the General Management unit for the 2020-2021 academic year, and possibly further. This is a terrific half-time position for those with a strong interest and knowledge in U.S. History, Economic History, U.S. Literature, or American Studies.
The Research Associate (RA) will report directly to faculty and administrative manager in the Research Staff Services office. The ideal RA candidate will be comfortable in an environment that requires a high level of independence, intellectual curiosity and the ability to use discretionary judgment.
Under the direction of the faculty, the RA will conduct background research, gather, analyze, edit, and draft all forms of academic writing; produce original written materials; contribute to a book project and other scholarly research products such as academic journal articles, articles for practitioners, teaching cases, or case supplements.
Exercise independent decision making with regard to progression of research project and methodologies. When confronted with unexpected research data, be able to make deductions, add insight, and draw conclusions to share with faculty.
Ensure compliance with department, University and federal regulations. Complete work with only general direction. Be aware of department, School, University policies and potential outside research policies.
This is a half-time term appointment starting right away through June 30, 2021 with potential for reappointment for the next year, and possibly further. Half-time positions are benefits eligible and can be paired to create a full-time position.

Bachelor's degree required. Evidence of outstanding academic achievement and excellent writing skills. Indication of related independent research experience and/or applied experience. Strong skills related to the Microsoft Office Suite are expected.
Knowledge and interest in U.S. History, Economic History, U.S. Literature, or American Studies is strongly preferred.
Ability to read academic, subject-specific information and write a reasoned and thoughtful analysis necessary. Evidence of prior high-quality, original academic writing required. All positions will be given a writing exam.
The candidate must have extremely high standards in terms of quality of work, attention to detail, strong organization skills, and absolute commitment to task completion. Must be able to balance multiple tasks and shifting priorities under tight deadlines at an accelerated pace when necessary.
This position requires an individual capable of consistent use of discretion, judgment, and initiative, with proven ability to work independently and creatively. Diplomatic skills, comfort in interacting with prominent individuals, and grace under pressure are essential. It is helpful if the candidate is familiar with navigating a complex organization, such as Harvard Business School.
