The primary function of this unit is to provide an effective and efficient link between the University Community and the University Police Department's operations and services 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. The Department of Police and Public Safety maintains the responsibility of providing a safe and secure community for the students, faculty, staff and visitors.
The Public Safety Supervisor works as a Patrol Sergeant who manages and directs employees in general patrol, traffic enforcement and investigative work. The Patrol Sergeant requires knowledge of staff availability, skills and resources to designate assignments. Establishes employee work expectations, reviews reports and assesses squad performance based on standards.
Patrol Sergeants have exceptional communication and negotiation skills as they have the dual responsibility of law enforcement and public service to a constituency of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Patrol Sergeants have full powers of arrest, enforce the laws of the State of North Carolina and the United States Government. Work involves supervision and/or management of a unit of officers or other departmental personnel in their responses to routine calls, emergencies, and other law enforcement services provided. Patrol Sergeants evaluate appropriateness of officer responses; designate assignments; direct needed resources; and interpret laws, ordinances, and department policies and procedures. Duties may include orientation and training of officers, inspections of officers and/or other departmental personnel on a shift, conduct pre-shift briefings, review of all reports and investigations accomplished during a shift, activity coordination, discipline, conducting performance reviews, and providing input concerning operational planning.
Minimum Education/Experience/Skill :
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate and two years of law enforcement experience. Additional Education and Experience will be necessary for progressive steps (Journey and Advanced).
NECESSARYSPECIALQUALIFICATIONS: Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.
Preferred Education/Experience/Skill :
An associate's degree or higher level of education is preferred for this position. Five years of law enforcement supervisory experience, preferably in a higher education setting.
Strongly prefer current certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.
Out-of-state candidates must have successfully completed a Basic Law Enforcement Training course accredited by the state of transfer to be considered. Out-of-state candidates cannot have a break in service from the out of state agency of more than one year. All out-of-state candidates will have to complete 96 hours (or more) of training to be eligible for NC Certification and pass the state exam.
