Within the Surgical Oncology Division, the Research Specialist will perform database management of procured and distributed specimens, to include daily and weekly database entry, log book entry, organization of freezer storage, and coordination and appropriate filling of all paper work necessary for North Carolina Tissue Consortium (NCTC) activities.
The Research Specialist will also be responsible for obtaining consent for tissue acquisition as needed. This will involve discussion with primary physician, director of tissue bank, and patients.
The employee will handle procurement of malignant and non-malignant tissue and corresponding blood specimens from operating room and pathology following policies and procedures for such collection, storage, processing and distribution as set up by the Tissue Procurement facility. This involves interaction with investigators to ensure that tissue is collected according to specific research study criteria. Employee will interact with patients and research nurses to explain the nature of the work in the NCTC should question arise in the informed consent process.
Other duties include outreach to clinics/practices outside the Division of Surgical Oncology and generating data for monthly Division of Surgical Oncology meetings.
