Essential Job Duties:
This is a time limited position (18 months) funded by The Appalachian Regional Commission and others with the goal of supporting the development and expansion of the regional food system. The position requires engagement in seven counties of the Southwestern NC Region; Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, and Swain, and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The workstation is located in the NCSU Extension Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Center located in Cherokee, NC.
Candidates should be familiar with basic evaluation practices and be comfortable supplying data for grant reporting. The agent will be part of a highly collaborative team of community leaders and professionals working on tight timelines to meet grant requirements. The candidate should demonstrate experience working in collaborative team settings and possess goals driven, value-based work ethic. Requires a close collaboration with the Project Director and other community partners to plan and deliver:
-Training program development and delivery. Training is targeted to producers, region-wide extension agents, and other regional stakeholders. -Entrepreneurial development. Helping food and farming businesses identify training and resource needs to expand and grow their business including a new incubator program in Jackson County. Development partners include Small Business Centers and each County Extension office. - Development of a CRAFT cohort, creating a co-learning team of farmers and food businesses. - Support for value-added production including the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian Tribal Cannery and collaboration with Blue Ridge Food Ventures -Social media skills including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram -Wholesale and retail market development -Institutional purchasing programs including hospitals, schools, and corporate clients -Program evaluation
One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in the job related field. The minimum GPA requirement will be waived for NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor's degree. – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one of the degrees in the job related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one of the degrees in the job related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the County Extension Area Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The County Extension Area Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The County Extension Area Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of county Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The County Extension Area Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.
Candidates shall also have demonstrated skills and abilities in program development and evaluation, and subject matter expertise in the area of specialization. Preference for entrepreneurial development, including the ability and demonstrated experience in supporting marketing programs as well as history of successfully managing food and farming businesses. Candidates must have proven personal effectiveness skills, including excellent interpersonal communication, team building, and problem-solving skills, and the ability to provide leadership to an educational program area by working successfully with agents and professors/specialists as well as industry clients in their subject matter area. Ability to work extra hours and weekends is required. A person must provide their own dependable, personal vehicle and have the ability to travel independently in the assigned geographical area. Computer literacy including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher is expected. Candidates should have an excellent time and resource management skills should be personable, and able to build networking coalitions. Evaluation, reporting, and management skills are desired.
Knowledge and experience in leadership, communications, educational presentations, public relations, marketing, effective use of technology, building relationships, and networking with other agencies and groups are preferred.
A Bachelors’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of a 2.5 (based on a 4.0 scale) in, Business, Marketing, or a related field is preferred with two years of field experience
