Essential Job Duties:
The Research Associate will serve as a Data Engineer for the Precision Sustainable Agriculture (PSA) Network, which services scientists collecting data on sustainable agriculture systems across the United States. The mission of the PSA network is to design uniform data collection and aggregate data from sustainable farming practices on a nationwide scale in order to develop predictive, real-time models to help farmers make decisions in a changing climate.
The Data Engineer will build visualizations around grower needs on a web platform by using data collected in real-time by network field technicians. The Data Engineer will need a knowledge of sustainable agriculture practices as well as computer science and coding techniques to effectively parse, and store data for modelers and future collaborators.
Responsibilities include of the Research Associate include, but are not limited to the following:
Assisting with designing and implementing data management (input, processing, storage, and output) systems to meet the needs of the PSA network.
Providing administration of existing databases and design their future growth as protocols evolve.
Creating visualizations from real-time and previous data for PSA partners.
Managing computer science interns on projects including web apps and data parsing activities.
The position is based in Beltsville, MD.
Other duties of the Research Associate include, but are not limited to the following:
Consulting to PSA partners on formatting data for structured data storage.
Participating in the PSA Data Flow Team.
Traveling to PSA partner meetings semi-annually.
Staying abreast of all research protocols and assist in their refinement.
Creating educational materials to support partner understanding of our IT infrastructur.
The position will also perform other duties as assigned.
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Experience in sustainable agriculture practices and field data collection.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Experience with R and familiarity with multiple computing platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux.
Ability to work independently and in a collaborative research environment is paramount.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal and data management skills.
Careful attention to detail.
Database management experience.
Training in statistical modeling and visualization.
Ability to recall information about protocols in a quick and timely manner.
Required license or certification:
Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days or hire. Must be maintained.
