Rutgers University Correctional Health Care (UCHC) is seeking a Per-Diem Advanced Practice Nurse for Adult Medical Services to work Statewide. The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) reports to the site psychiatrist for clinical matters (e.g. diagnosis and treatment) and to the site administrator for administrative matters (e.g. vacation, timekeeping). The Advanced Practice Nurse ensures that the total health needs of inmates within New Jersey Department of Corrections are met. The age range of inmates varies from 16 to 65+.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Performs psychiatric evaluations, conducts psychiatric follow-up visits, and prescribes psychiatric medications to inmates within the New Jersey Department of Corrections.
Responds to and initiates care for psychiatric emergencies throughout the facility.
Identifies inmate/patient psychiatric problems and prescribes treatment under direction of a physician.
Implements psychiatric care utilizing therapeutic regimens approved by the physician.
Provides education to inmate/patient, health care, and correctional staff.
Documents all mental health care contacts.
Follows security regulations for keys, sharps, and controlled medications.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Graduate of an accredited college/university nurse practitioner program with current Certification/Licensure in the state of employment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New Jersey.
Current certificate as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
At least two (2) years of related nursing experience preferably as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
Master’s Degree in Nursing or related health field.
Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
Must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation from one site to another.
