Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is currently seeking qualified applicants for an Environmental Specialist I or II position. EH&S is an employing unit which reports the Senior Vice President for Division of Operations and Finance Services at Iowa State University (ISU). EH&S aids the campus community in preventing illness and injury, protects the environment and connects the university to the message of safety and preparedness. Responsibilities of this position include support of various environmental programs impacting Iowa State University.Programs include federally mandated Clean Water Act (), Clean Air Act (), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (), and various related programs including National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (), Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (), Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4), Campus Title V permit and Non-Domestic Waste Water (NDW2) programs.
These responsibilities will include conducting environmental sampling, completing campus inspections, and inventorying materials and equipment as required by the universityâs multipleÂ permits; assist sustainability efforts related to hazardous waste minimization and recycling.
This position will collect unwanted materials including chemical, radiological, biological and other special waste streams and transport to theÂ ISU-Regulated Materials Facility (ISU-RMF); operate a pathological waste incinerator; provide training on environmental topics to university personnel; and assist in the overall operation of theÂ RCRA,Â UST,Â AST and other regulatory programs. This position will also provide regulatory compliance assistance for all University labs and facilities; interact with local, state and federal regulatory agencies; and provide technical expertise during hazardous material emergencies.
Duties of this position require the ability to lift 40 pounds, have sufficient manual dexterity to handle chemicals and work with tools; and wear a respirator.
In addition to the duties listed above, the Environmental Specialist II will oversee the operations of the RMF to ensure compliance with regulations and facility standard operating procedures. Coordinate hazardous waste collection, segregation and storage of waste chemical containers, and maintain disposal records as required by federal regulations and permits.
The successful candidate will possess effective written and oral communication skills along with the ability to form positive working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external customers. The candidate will be able to work independently as well as with a team. Outstanding attention to detail, and strong organizational and multitasking skills will be essential for effectively performing simultaneous duties. The candidate will also possess the ability to routinely use personal computers along with a variety of software to maintain hazardous materials information and related reports.
The Environmental Specialist I is a pay grade 33.
The Environmental Specialist II is a pay grade 34.
The University is in the process of implementing a new classification and compensation structure. The impending change is expected to be completed by Fall 2020. Any P&S employee hired through this posting may be assigned a new title and associated pay grade upon the employment start date (and after the initial offer), commensurate with qualifications required for the position. The duties and responsibilities of the posted position, in addition to compensation offered, will not be affected by this process.
