Bachelor's degree and 1 year of related experience.
Masterâs or Ph.D. degree in an area of Plant Sciences involving Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant Genetics, Biochemistry or Molecular Biology. Experience with molecular genetic techniques, maize transformation and regeneration, and gene editing. Experience with data/statistical analysis, data management, statistical software, and computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and graphics software. Supervisory experience. Demonstrated tissue culture troubleshooting skills.
The Office of Biotechnology seeks applicants for an Assistant Scientist I in the Plant Transformation Facility.The primary responsibilities are in the area of maize transformation and regeneration to include embryo dissection and both Agrobacterium and biolistic mediated transformation techniques. Additionally, participation in rice and soybean transformation services are required as needed.
Other duties include data collection, record keeping, and communication with customers as well as coordination of lab activities and logistics. Additional responsibilities include hiring and training hourly student assistants, assisting in training and outreach activities, lab safety oversight, monitoring and organizing lab supply inventory, purchasing lab supplies, and managing and maintaining lab equipment. When needed, the incumbent will write research progress reports and will assist in other writing tasks. The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently and as part of a research team.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills will be essential. The candidate should also have strong plant tissue culture related troubleshooting abilities, be comfortable solving unexpected challenges, be motivated to improve experimental processes and have the ability to perform routine statistical analysis.
The University is in the process of implementing a new classification and compensation structure. The impending change is expected to be completed by Fall 2020. Any P&S employee hired through this posting may be assigned a new title and associated pay grade upon the employment start date (and after the initial offer), commensurate with qualifications required for the position. The duties and responsibilities of the posted position, in addition to compensation offered, will not be affected by this process.
