General purpose:TheFox Wood Shop Research Technician assists with the general operations of the Fox Wood Shop; supports fall and spring instruction and student homework access to the Fox Wood Studio following campus protocols; supports research in the shop; and has access to the facility to pursue individual research outside of work hours. This appointment is for the 10 month 2020-2021 academic year.
Summary of Essential Functions:Â
Assist with the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the Fox Wood Shop, ensuring that all equipment operates effectively and safely, and supplies are stocked and available.
Assist with daily deep cleaning and disinfecting of equipment and tools following CDC guidance, OSHA guidance and manufacturer instructions.Â
Assist with supervising student homework access to the Fox Wood Shop and monitoring campus public health and safety measures, including physical distancing, face coverings, personal protective equipment, personal hygiene and surface cleaning.Â
Serve as an educational resource, and support Undergraduate and Graduate students regarding related processes of the Fox Wood Shop. â¨
Provide assistance to the Fox Wood Shop Studio Manager. â¨
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Â Assist with maintaining Environmental Health and Safety compliance, conducting EHS training for MICA employees working in the Academic Services Fabrication Studios, maintaining required EHS documentation, enforcing EHS policies, modeling safe studio practices, and generally ensuring safety
Provide technical support to students in theFox Wood Shop â¨
Assist with monitoring and maintaining equipment in the Fox Wood ShopÂ
Enforce studio policies and demonstrate the safe and appropriate use of equipment, tools, materials, techniques, and processes in the Fox Wood ShopÂ
Provide assistance and guidance to any Fox Wood Shop student workers (student technicians and/or work-study)
Contribute to tutorials for processes and techniques used in the Fox Wood ShopÂ
Help maintain supplies for the Fox Wood Shop by communicating with the Studio Manager
Share research to enhance the Fox Wood Shop and classes held therein.
Perform other related duties as assignedÂ
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Practical working experience with woodworking processes and techniques for hand tools, power tools, and stationary machinery.â¨
Good mechanical sensibility â¨
Ability to assess and trouble-shoot woodworking tools and equipment â¨
Strong organizational skills â¨
Ability to collaborate with students and faculty â¨
Good communication skills
Bachelor, Fine Art or a four-year degree with experience working in a wood shop
Demonstrated yearsâ experience in intermediate or advanced woodworking â¨
Demonstrated yearsâ experience operating table saws, jointers, and planersâ¨
Required to lift, pull and carry, up to 45 lbs.
Experience working with the following: â¨

Knowledge of basic construction techniques, cold connections related to woodworking and hardware â¨
Knowledge of material finishing and finishesÂ
