This position is responsible for the testing, implementation, and operation of WVD. This includes research and self-led training on the WVD service, design and development, and operational administration of the WVD service. This position will work alongside other IT groups to provide virtual desktop and application services that meet customer requirements and comply with WVU policies and standards. This position will manage security and access to the WVD system, as well as providing expert guidance and instruction where needed.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Be responsible for the administration of WVU's Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) implementation. This solution provides virtual desktops to students, employees, and staff using Microsoft's Azure Cloud infrastructure. WVD will replace the need for many physical client computers at WVU including many academic computer labs and training classrooms. Responsibility for WVD administration includes virtual server management, network file share management, network infrastructure, PowerShell coding, and a good understanding of cloud infrastructure.
Be responsible for administration of Azure services including but not limited to virtual machines, storage accounts, policies, group/user administration. Understanding of public/hybrid cloud environments.
Design, develop, and administer desktop and application virtualization solutions in WVD
Be responsible for desktop and application virtualization technologies. This position will stay informed on current WVD/virtualization technologies as they emerge. This position will be responsible for the analysis and testing of new WVD/virtualization technologies and providing recommendations to senior IT staff and supervisor on changes or improvements to WVU's WVD implementation.
Research, design, test, and implement WVD solutions that reduce cost, resources, and administrative overhead. Solutions may include code-based automation, DevOps, GitHub, and other strategies as appropriate.
Manage Active Directory and Group Policy administration.
Manage accounts, file shares and folder structures in Azure.
Prepare technical documentation including but not limited to infrastructure/application diagrams and flowcharts, code notation, knowledge base articles, and technical training/process instructions.
Work independently and as part of a team on multiple projects. Ability to independently manage time and project priority is required.
Subject Matter Expert for WVD. This position will work with ITS staff to provide guidance and solutions for ITS customers and college IT departments.
Software licensing analysis, including but not limited to analysis of End User License Agreements (EULAs), administration of licensing servers and administration of software metering software.
Complete other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in an IT centric field and/or equivalent combination of education or experience.
One (1) year experience in the following:
Administering server operating systems in an enterprise environment.
Managing Microsoft Active Directory.
Knowledge of Microsoft server operations systems.
Knowledge of public/hybrid cloud architecture.
Knowledge of virtualization technologies including but not limited to virtual servers, remote desktop services, application virtualization, and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI).
Knowledge of Active Directory and Group Policy management.
Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact at all organizational levels with technical staff, managers, and end-users.
