The Athletic Trainer, under general work direction, supervises the prevention, ongoing assessment, acute care, treatment and management of athletic injuries and conditions o fstudentÂathletes to restore needed levels of function for participation in athletic competition, activities of daily living, and vocational activities using knowledge and modern principles of athletic training.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Evaluates, treats and rehabilitates injuries of A&M-San Antonio student-athletes. Taping, bracing and preparation of student-athletes for practice and games ( events).
Provides attendance and supervision, for safety preventive and emergency care of student-athletes, at practices and games (events) of all sports teams. Travel, as directed and required, with teams.
Evaluate athletic injuries, including suspected concussion, and coordinate follow-up referrals to the appropriate physician.
Responsible for university's adherence with the RRAC Concussion Management Policy.
Oversees the university's Drug Testing Program of student-athletes.
Coordinates with Fitness & Wellness Coordinator for appropriate meals and supplements utilized by student-athletes.
Charting and record keeping of student-athlete injuries utilizing current record keeping systems and protocols.
Coordinates and consults with assigned Team Physician, student-athletes, and medical facilities regarding physical and mental health care.
Serves as Liaison to: team physician, NAIA required drug testing post-season events, all used medical clinics, and hospitals.
Works cooperatively with coaches in designing and implementing conditioning programs for student-athletes as well as educate coaches and student-athletes regarding concussion and injury management, conditioning, diet, rest, exercise, and other pertinent health matters.
Responsible for the maintenance and supervision of athletic training room, equipment and supply inventory.
Oversee all athletic training room operations including purchasing, insurance, and medical claims.
Maintain comprehensive medical records for individual student-athletes, daily injury reports for all athletes, and annual injury report summarizing injuries, treatments, and follow up care.
Conduct oneself in a professional manner at all times by abiding by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Code of Ethics.
Maintains professional licenses and certifications.
Other miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
May assist in supervision of student athletic trainer apprenticeship education and sport scheduling.
Education - Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university.
Experience - Minimum of three years full-time experience or six years part-time, paid or voluntary experience as a student trainer.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
Knowledge of drug testing procedures and programs.
Ability to comprehend oral and written instructions.
Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
Ability to use independent judgment and to gather, manage and impart information to individual student-athletes, coaches, sport teams, and administrative personnel within the university community.
Ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others.
Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
Knowledge of medical and first aid skills including joint taping and physical therapy skills.
Compliance with all NAIA. RRAC, NATA, system and university rules and regulations is required in this position.
Licensing, Professional Certification:
Certification as a Certified Athletic Trainer by the Board of Certification (BOC) of the National Athletics Trainers' Association. Must be current or eligible to obtain State of Texas License within six months.
