Outreach Dentists for the School of Dentistry oversee the delivery of care to patients in our Outreach clinic sites by teaching and directing pre-doctoral students in the comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, treatment, and management of patients.
The person in this role must be proficient to teach, demonstrate, and assess general-practice-level procedures in operative dentistry, prosthodontics, pediatric dentistry, endodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, and to assess and manage dental emergencies; with the possibility of providing direct patient care. This position supports Group Leaders at the School of Dentistry in evaluating the clinical and professional development of students.
The days and availability for this position are flexible. Same day short notice availability is preferred but not required. This person would provide backup faculty coverage for both planned and unplanned faculty absences.
Oversee and instruct School of Dentistry students in the care of patients at our Outreach Clinics.
Assist dental, dental hygiene, and dental therapy students as they generate comprehensive treatment and prevention/management plans for their patients; ensuring that treatment plans are comprehensively developed, appropriately adapted to patient needs, and correctly sequenced to manage patient oral health needs.
Coordinate and promote a cooperative clinical educational environment between dental, dental hygiene, and dental therapy students.
Support faculty from the Department of Primary Dental Care in providing instruction and oversight to students.
Work with staff, students, and patients to ensure patients receive high-quality care, and students receive a clinical education that meets the standards of each respective Department and discipline at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.
Work with the Outreach Clinic site management and staff to direct care in line with their policies and procedures.
The person in this position is expected to support all clinical policies and procedures of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.
Attend the Annual Outreach Dental Review to stay current with the SOD policies, teaching methods, and best practices.
DDS, DMD or equivalent degree
License to practice dentistry in Minnesota, or eligible for licensure
In good standing with the Minnesota Board of Dentistry
Three or more years' experience in the practice of general dentistry
Current CPR Certification
Experience in clinical or preclinical teaching
Experience in a community outreach setting
AEGD or GPR certificate
