Position Summary and ResponsibilitiesThe Office of the Dean of Studies provides important resources to all students as they develop their academic interests towards the successful fulfillment of their undergraduate degrees and as they plan for their post graduate education. In partnership with the Dean of Studies, the Assistant Dean of Studies supports the mission of the Office by overseeing administrative processes, advising students about graduation requirements, and managing domestic study away and exchange programs.
Evaluates transfer credit for incoming freshmen with IB/AP credits and transfer students, including students from the Exploring Transfer Program, assigning them to a class year and advisor and registering them for classes.
Manages domestic academic leaves of absences including overseeing the application process, advising students, evaluating returning transcripts, and maintaining relationships with the schools and programs our students attend.
Working with the Dean of Studies, provides advice to students, with special attention to those with atypical paths to graduation. In collaboration with the Registrar, monitors student academic progress in order to identify and resolve concerns that may impact or alter the expected date of graduation.
Works with the Office of Fellowships and Pre-Health Advising to advise students pursuing careers in the health professions, and with the Office of International Programs on the transfer of credits from studies abroad. Tracks students who will finish over the summer or into a 9th semester.
Coordinates the work of the Committee on Leaves and Privileges (CLP). CLP reviews students petition for overloads, underloads, retroactive credit; substitution of courses to meet college requirements; permission to accelerate graduation; permission for a double major. The coordination of these requests involves managing the applications, interviewing students, communicating with departments and faculty for permissions and recommendations and managing all correspondence and records.
Participates in Dean of Studies Staff Committee to discuss particular student problems and policy questions with regard to DOS work.
Works as Coordinator for the Exploring Transfer Program.
Serves as Dean of Studies liaison to Student Information System (SIS) committee, which is chaired by the Registrar and addresses college-wide data management issues. Maintains the Dean of Studies web presence, including updating online forms.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in relevant field preferred.
Work experience in higher education is strongly preferred.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; the ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff and administrators at all levels in a diverse environment.
Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with the MS Office Suite. Familiarity with Banner Student Information System and Wordpress are desirable.
Must be organized and attentive to detail; must be able to manage multiple projects and competing priorities under time constraints.
Must be able to understand and apply policies and procedures while exercising prudent judgment in sensitive and confidential matters.
